Kings Arms Hotel

It was very quiet but we were between lunch and dinner time! A lovely lady welcomed us and took orders and brought our meal out. It was freshly prepared, the chicken skewers were a generous portion and I had the starter of pate as my main meal. Absolutely delicious duck and orange flavour pate. We sat by the roaring wood fire, perfect way to spend a damp grey afternoon. I would thoroughly recommend.

We’d arranged to have lunch with friends so couldn’t do as we’d immediately on arriving wanted to do which was to leave and find somewhere else to eat. I didn’t think places like this still existed - especially not in beautiful Sandwich! Grubby, sticky, tatty and decidedly lack lustre - no atmosphere whatsoever and a barman who (tho pleasant enough), seemed out of his depth with just a handful of customers. Very happily the ‘new chef’ with the ‘new menu’ presented us all with more than acceptably good meals (there is a 4 Star Food Hygiene Award in place) - so that was a huge relief. No Guiness or Guiness Zero was another disappointment. We even had to ask to move to another table because customers nearby were vaping but barman said nothing.to them at all. I gather the Kings Arms is for sale - it used to be THE place to go and it was often hard to get a table. New owners would need to gut the place and start from scratch - as it is, we certainly can’t recommend it.

We come here quite a bit for lunch and we've never been disappointed. The service is always great and the food is always piping hot and delicious. We came with our friend The Captain and we had beers and wine...naturally. The Captain ordered from the specials board, he had Tomato soup and Chicken, Prawn and Avocado Salad with new potatoes. He said it was really tasty. I had Filo Prawns with a garlic mayo followed by Fish and Chips. I'd been craving Fish and Chips for ages and I'd had a few and nothing had been hiding the spot but these were perfect. The batter not too greasy, not too crispy and yet not too soggy. Perfect. My husband had smoked Salmon to start followed by Steak and Kidney pudding with Roasties and veg. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals too. Unfortunately we were all too stuffed for a pudding but even the pudding list sounded yummy. Couldn't tell you how much it cost as we were treated but the starters were around £7 each and the mains somewhere between £15-20. Well worth it.

Truly lovely staff greeted me when I chose to nip in for a wee beer, whilst ambling the gorgeous streets of Sandwich. A welcoming environment with a wide selection of drinks to soak in the historic atmosphere. They are also an hotel and will definitely be back, likely as a hotel guest!!
