About Penmaenuchaf
Penmaenuchaf stands on a wooded slope above the Mawddach estuary near Dolgellau, with Cadair Idris rising behind it. The stone-fronted Victorian house was bought in 2022 by Zoe and Neil Kedward of the Seren group, who have been steadily working through the building — rooms, restaurant, bar and lounges — while keeping the original character intact. The result is a country house hotel that feels updated rather than gutted.
The bedrooms are individually done and vary in size and outlook, with the best of them looking straight down the estuary. Expect proper beds, good linen, and bathrooms that have been brought up to current standards. The house has retained its panelling, fireplaces and window seats, and the lounges are set up for reading and sitting rather than passing through. Gardens run to several acres and there are fishing rights on the Mawddach.
Food is a serious part of the offer. Head chef Dan Andree builds menus around ingredients sourced as locally as possible, with a set dinner menu and a shorter bar option. Breakfast is cooked to order and included. The bar keeps a decent list of Welsh beers and spirits alongside the wine.
This is a good base for the southern part of the national park, which is quieter than the Snowdon end. The Mawddach Trail runs along the estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth and is flat enough for anyone; the Pony Path up Cadair Idris starts a short drive away; and Barmouth's beach is fifteen minutes by car. It suits walkers who want somewhere comfortable to come back to, and couples looking for a food-led weekend without the formality of a five-star hotel.

This is an expensive hotel. It is a very special experience. We had a lovely 2 nights here enjoying our very beautiful and comfortable room, the amazing food( creative, beautifully presented, interesting and mind blowing), pretty gardens ( complete with swallows and goldfinches). Staff were attentive and friendly and felt truly invested in us having a good experience at the hotel and in the area.

I think this may be the best hotel I have ever stayed in. My husband treated me to two nights here for my birthday. The staff knew this as soon as they checked us in. The room was gorgeous with beautiful views. It was clean and modern, the bed was really comfortable. You can tell every little detail has been thought of with the interior design, it’s just lovely. I have coeliac disease and I did not feel like I missed out one bit at the restaurant. All the staff knew and were knowledgeable about allergens and dietary requirements. I was given my own tailored menu. The dinner was EXQUISITE. I had the asparagus starter, hispi cabbage main and chocolate mousse. I really cannot fault it. Really delicious. Breakfast was also brilliant. It is quite a pricey stay but you really do get your money’s worth. I cannot say a bad word about the place. The staff are lovely and attentive, the grounds are beautiful, the location is great. I hope we will be back! :)

Lovely period property we'll located for a walk to Dolgellau, easy 10 kin drive to barmouth harbour. Newly renovated interior, immaculate rooms everywhere, clean white linen on the comfy bed, fantastic chef and very friendly staff. A very well deserved 5 stars

It’s a measure of a great hotel when you want to move in and never leave, which was our feeling once we had driven up the moss-lined winding road from Dollgellau and found the warm and welcoming Penmaenuchaf hotel. The old house has been beautifully redecorated in harmonious paint colours and soft furnishings which photographs don’t do justice to. It is a harmonious and very comfortable place in which to base yourself for further exploration, or just hang out in the comfy lounges, bar and library. Every one of the team was professional, friendly, helpful and on the top of their game. This is our new favourite hotel in Wales and we look forward to returning soon.
