About The Sir William Fox
A handsome brick-fronted building in Westoe Village gives The Sir William Fox its character, the kind of period frontage that hints at a long history in this quiet corner of South Shields. Inside, the hotel holds just 13 rooms, each finished to a comfortable, well-kept standard rather than in vast numbers, making for a fairly intimate stay.
Guests get free WiFi throughout, air conditioning, and a full English breakfast to start the day, with a restaurant, bar and snack bar covering meals and drinks without needing to leave the building. There's a garden for quieter moments, a gym on-site, and practical extras including luggage storage, porter and concierge services. The property also handles weddings and meetings, with dedicated function space for both, and pets are welcome for those travelling with animals.
Free on-site parking makes arriving by car straightforward, and the Westoe Village setting puts the coast and South Shields' local attractions within easy reach. It's a hotel built around solid, dependable comforts rather than flourish, suited to travellers who want a characterful base with the practical boxes ticked.
What guests say
Stayed for 1 night, the towels had holes in them, the furniture was mismatched, the floor creaky and the whole place was in need of a lick of paint. The mattress was soft, the bed a decent size, the TV was tiny and the shower awful. Bathroom products were supplied and there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room with decent sized cups. The room was clean and what really made this hotel was the breakfast and the morning staff, good selection of hot and cold food which came out quickly and with a smile. I would recommend this hotel.

The hotel was grubby, poorly kept and in need of upgrades, the breakfast service was strained, the table was not cleared between guests and we were left with someone else's cutlery which we appeared to be expected to use. the bed headboard was scratched , the mattress stained and lumpy, the en suite bathroom was very poor and very old and in need of repair. However the staff were very cheerful, helpful and polite but for me, I won't be back...

Nice clean and tidy room. Small selection of reasonably priced evening meals, cooked to order so a short wait, but well worth it. Last orders for food is 8.30 pm. Small bar with limited choice. Plenty of alternatives nearby if you want more choice of food and/or drink. Excellent breakfast served from 7 am. Overall good value and recommended.

Our first time on Tyneside. A pleasant surprise. We had a clean, tidy, well-maintained room. Plenty of power sockets provided to charge your phones and laptops at the bedside. Why do so many other places fail to do this? We had a tasty evening meal. Good choice of breakfasts. Better bacon than many places. Good off-street car park, when you find the entrance next to the bus stop in Dean Street, opposite the end of Ada Street. Buses run late into the evening. The rooms are hidden from the busy streets, with the front views over Westoe Village, a timeless, litter-free gem.
