About Hotel du Vin St Andrews

Occupying a run of Victorian houses at 40 The Scores, this is a well-judged town hotel on the clifftop terrace between the castle and the golf courses. The location is close to ideal for a first visit: the cathedral ruins are five minutes east, the Old Course five minutes west, and the restaurants of North Street and Market Street are immediately behind.

There are forty-two rooms and suites across the connected buildings, running from compact singles through classic and deluxe doubles to sea-view rooms and junior suites. Character varies as a result of the conversion, with some rooms high-ceilinged and grand and others tucked under the eaves, so it is worth being specific about what you want when booking. The sea-view categories look north across the bay.

The bistro follows the group's familiar format of unfussy French-influenced cooking and a deep, fairly priced wine list, with a bar alongside that works well for a drink before dinner. Private dining and event rooms make it a common choice for small weddings and golf-group gatherings. Parking is limited, as it is everywhere on The Scores, but with the whole town walkable that matters less than it might.

This hotel was exactly as we had hoped for a 2 night couples getaway. The staff were super friendly and couldn't be faulted. The sea view room was very comfy with excellent facilities, and one of the best showers I've experienced. We didn't eat at the hotel because we wanted to sample local eateries. There is only limited parking and this was early March. Summer season might be a challenge to park.

We are locals so can’t comment on the rooms unfortunately however with the standard of reception, bar and restaurant I can only guess it would be comfy and your wishes accommodated. This is our go too establishment for myself and our friends. I highly recommend for food and drinks. It is good value for your money. It is an overall winner in St Andrews. I can safely say that it’s one of the very few places in St Andrews that is consistently good. Customer service is one of the best in St Andrews where they go above and beyond, whither it’s a quick tea/coffee or A la carte. They also make our four legged friends, welcome and at home. Dianne

Hotel managed by school students. My husband booked a bunch of rooms for friends and family and came back very disappointed at the service. The group shipped their golf clubs back home and they needed tape for the labels; this hotel said they did not have tape of any kind. Seriously? Golf course is stunning and the location of the hotel is beautiful. Food at the restaurant was mediocre; the worst of the whole trip. King beds are two twin beds joined together. Very substandard. If you are a light sleeper, the seagulls won’t allow you any quiet. Some of the kids try very hard to provide service, but this is some sort of training ground for these hospitality students and service falls through the cracks. Can’t recommend but they have a captive audience and not much competition.

It would be churlish to say this is not a pleasant hotel, but for the price, it falls well short of what you would expect from a premium hotel. On arrival, the member of staff on reception was disinterested and not at all welcoming. They then showed no discretion at all in announcing the monetary value to the outstanding amount due for the room for everyone in reception to hear. The bedrooms, are large, spacious and comfortable, the bathroom in particular is very good. However, for the cost of the room I would have anticipated a double of King bed, rather than two single beds pushed together. The continental breakfast and coffee were excellent, but the cooked breakfast was cold on arrival. Although the stay was not particularly positive, there were many members of staff who were extremely friendly and welcoming. The bar staff, and the housekeeping team all made an effort to make you feel very welcome. Overall it just feels like because of the prime location, and constant flow of affluent tourists, the hotel is able to get away with delivering an experience that does not match the premium price. I would not stay again, and would not recommend to a friend.
