The Golden Lion Hotel

Went to Cronies restaurant for lunch and really enjoyed it. We were seated very quickly and were close to a pianist who provided a nice atmosphere. We skipped the starters and had the steak pie and monumental burger as our mains. Both were very good. The burger was huge and impossible to eat by hand, as is my normal practice. That’s a compliment, not a complaint. The staff were very attentive and friendly and happy to engage with us in conversation. Worth a visit.

Very interesting attic-like room. The room is slightly small for its price, but its understandable since it was peak season when I stayed. The baggage storage services are also greatly appreciated. The only reason why this is getting 2 stars is because the wifi does not work in any area of the hotel except for the lobby. For a hotel that uses free wifi as a selling point, the least that they could do is to ensure wifi is accessible across all levels of the building! This problem is mentioned in many other reviews, please take note of this!!!

Booked a 4 night stay in May 2026 to visit Stirling and some of the surrounding towns and distilleries. The hotel is in a great location, only a 3 minute walk from the station. It is in the town centre, close to shops (we didn't visit any) and plenty of restaurants. It is also close all the main tourist attractions - Stirling Castle, The Old Town Jail and Stirling Distillery, all of which are a 10-15 minute walk, but they are all up the hill. The room was clean and comfortable with plenty of space. Our room included a king size bed, two seater sofa and a desk. The bathroom was a wet room meaning easy access for people with mobility issues. The bed linen was good quality and the bed was extremely comfortable. There were big fluffy towels, dressing gowns and the best selection of teas and coffees that I have seen in a hotel room for a long time. There was no fridge or safe, but it did have a proper hairdryer. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We ate in the restaurant twice and enjoyed the meal both times. On Saturday there was live music in the form a piano player and a music student singing show tune classics. All very enjoyable. The bar is well stocked with beers and sprits, especially whisky. Ros, one of the owners is whisky afficionado and is happy to talk to you about the different ones behind the bar, and offer advice on visiting distilleries. Gary and Ros are great hosts, always checking that we were enjoying ourselves and everything was up to scratch. Based on our experience we would highly recommend.

More like a 2-star hotel than a 3-star. The first room we were offered didn't have a working tv. This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but there's no access to wifi in the rooms. We weren't there to sit in our room and watch tv all day, but with the price we were paying we felt like we should at the least have access to a working tv since we couldn't use wifi. We asked 3 times for someone to come up and see if they could fix the tv. After we were ignored for over 4 hours we requested a new room. The new room was a downgrade compared to the other. The bathroom didn't even have a tub or a way to keep the shower water from getting all over the floor since the shower was like what you would find in a locker room. Because water would get all over the bathroom the grout between the tiles was worn and disgusting. At this point we knew we weren't going to get anything better so we decided to put up with it. We did not eat the the restaurant based off of the state of the hotel (dirty, dusty, moldy). I would not trust the food. The final nail in the coffin was when they told us we had an outstanding bill because the person at the front desk when we checked in gave us the wrong quote. The person at the desk was rude and clearly had no idea what she was doing. She wouldn't even offer us a piece of paper with the original quote or a breakdown of our bill. I was able to find my original booking through my email and I confirmed on my own that we were quoted incorrectly, so we did pay, but if you are going to suddenly tell a guest they own 2x what they were told when they checked-in you should at least have the bill and original booking available for proof. This was by far the worst place we stayed at on our trip. Avoid at all costs.
