Stirling packs a lot into a small area, from castle-topped hills to loch-filled forest. The town itself holds the historical weight, with the National Wallace Monument watching over the plain and Stirling Old Town Jail and the Smith Art Gallery and Museum covering the quieter side of local history. It's a good base for a day or two of sightseeing before heading out towards the hills.

West towards Aberfoyle, the Trossachs take over and the pace changes to woodland trails, tree-top courses and water. Go Ape Aberfoyle and Rednock Trekking suit an active day out, while Loch Katrine and Queen Elizabeth Forest Park are better for a slower pace, on foot, by bike or on the water. Families tend to gravitate towards Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park and Briarlands Farm, both easy additions to a day spent between Stirling and Aberfoyle, with escape rooms like Escape Stirling filling a wet-weather gap.
