The Prospect of Whitby hardly needs an introduction. It is simply one of the most iconic proper British pubs you could hope to find in London. I honestly have no idea how to describe just how good it is, so perhaps the photos are my best silent words. Still, I feel I should at least try. Where do you start? From the entrance, with those lovely old square paned windows, to the interior, the paintings, photographs and countless little objects on the walls, the whole place almost feels like a museum, except one that is still very much alive. If you really look closely, you could probably spend half the evening searching online for the history behind individual items. The bar, the service and, of course, the view over the Thames are all first class. But the most important thing is the atmosphere.....the feeling that for a moment you are living alongside history. Not the history of generals, admirals, kings or queens, but the history of Ordinary People. Sitting there with a friend, looking out over the Thames with a pint after a long working day, I could not help thinking about all the People before us who may have sat in the same place, looked at the same river and felt something similar. Different lives, different centuries, but perhaps the same simple pleasure. What a life they had. What a life we have.🥰

Loved this pub! We stopped during a long walk along the Thames from Embankment to Canary Wharf. Didn’t eat but the food looked delicious and menu varied and not horrendously expensive given the location. Lovely outside seating with river view and choice of seat in the shade or in the sun. We were lucky that we visited not on a weekend so the patio was fairly quiet. Would very happily return!

Had a lovely time at the Prospect of Whitby. We tried the burger and the sirloin steak — both were excellent. The burger was especially memorable: toasted bun, crispy bacon, delicious beef, and a slightly sweet sauce that worked perfectly together. The sirloin steak was cooked beautifully and full of flavour. The music was great too — honestly felt like someone had put on my own playlist, which made the atmosphere even better. Even on one of the hottest days in London, we were still completely relaxed with the breeze from the Thames. Sitting by the river in one of London’s oldest historic pubs gives the whole experience a unique character. Friendly service, great food, amazing music, and a perfect setting. Definitely worth visiting.

Great English Pub. An amazing place right on the Thames with both upstairs and downstairs courtyards with views across the river. History abounds with stories about past customers reaching from the 1700s until more recent time. A nice touch is a hanging gallows out the back paying homage to the local 'hanging judge's that used to frequent the pub. The staff are super friendly, even when super busy. A great selection of beers and whilst not cheap, it is not stupid expensive. Absolutely worth a visit, I will be going back next time I am in town.
