The Crown at Wells

We popped in for a quick drink and the staff were so welcoming that we ended up staying for food. Even though I can be a bit of a picky pain in the backside to feed, the team were genuinely happy to accommodate my menu changes — nothing felt like too much trouble. For my main, I had the chicken and leek pie and it was divine. Mary Berry herself would have been hard‑pressed to make pastry that good. It wasn’t even slightly soggy and had a beautiful lightness to it. I was secretly hoping it was shop‑bought so I could take some home, but no — it’s made in‑house, which explains why it tasted so special. We were actually staying at another establishment in Wells and came here because we couldn’t face the other place’s menu for a third night. We’re so glad we did. The whole experience was lovely, and the Hot Fuzz references absolutely made our evening. A wonderful find — we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in the area.

Me and my partner came to Wells for a short stay inspired by Hot Fuzz with the Crown pub central to our trip. The pub and surrounding areas looked amazing however this was the only amazing part. The waitress was quite rude after taking our order (especially when I declined a drink) perhaps taking out the anger for another group in the restaurant on us. The food was quite disappointing when it arrived however it was not the end of the world as it was somewhat fairly priced. We went into the bar after our meal and it was slightly better than the restaurant. I wouldn’t steer people away from this pub however do anticipate the drawbacks mentioned in this review and ones like it.

Visited for a lunch with friends. Drinks were good. Menu is pretty traditional pub food, but on the more expensive side, especially for what it is. Burger was fine but not great - chips were very good. If you're an allergy sufferer, it's probably worth avoiding. Not because of any risk, but because there's an incredibly laborious handwritten form process which required about 10 minutes of discussion between staff and signing a piece of paper multiple times just to order a burger and chips (with a nut allergy). I appreciate that restaurants, pubs, cafés etc. need to clarify the risk of allergens, but customers don't want to be treated like a potential lawsuit, they want to be treated with respect. A simple chat about whether the kitchen uses nuts and whether a dish can be guaranteed nut free (yes, everything says it 'may contain traces' if you buy it in) will suffice most of the time. All in all, a nice location and good quality beer on tap. Some veggie/vegan options.

Lovely two night stay. Miranda and her team took great care of us. Alan was a wonderful dinner host, giving us his Hot Fuzz anecdotes. Breakfast was superb. Location is perfect for a couple of days in Wells.
