Couples after a quiet break will find The Rocking Lodge suited to their needs. This single-bedroom cottage sits on a working farm on the lower slopes of Blencathra, with views across to the fell. The whole place is yours alone, arranged on one floor: a combined living and kitchen area with a double bed in an adjoining section, and a shower room. The kit includes a two-ring hob and microwave, a television, and heating; wi-fi, linen and towels come as standard.

The lodge's distinguishing feature is its mechanical one—the entire structure rocks gently back and forth at the flick of a switch, a quirk worth experiencing in person. Outside, a small terrace with garden furniture overlooks the farm and the surrounding landscape. You have private parking for one car. A pub is within a mile, and Keswick, with its restaurants, shops and tourist attractions, is five miles away. The cottage is non-smoking.
