Mallards

This stone-built cottage takes its name from the mallard ducks that inhabit the riverside grounds. Access is via a flight of steep steps through the gardens—worth noting if mobility is a consideration. Inside, the ground-floor layout centres on an open-plan living space with original wooden shutters and exposed Lakeland stone, warmed by an open fire on cooler evenings. Two king bedrooms overlook the steppingstones and river, while the bathroom has a bath with shower over.

The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking: electric cooker with ceramic hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge-freezer. Essentials including heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are covered, along with initial fuel for the fire. A single dog is welcome. You have the whole property to yourselves, with private parking for two cars and a shared garden area with seating.

Carnforth is within walking distance of Ambleside, where the Lake District's independent shops, pubs and restaurants cluster around the historic town centre. Waterhead Pier, dating to 1845, sits roughly 20 minutes away on foot and connects to ferries across the lakes.
