About Chartwell Retreat

Chartwell Retreat suits travellers who want to base themselves on foot in the heart of Whitby, whether that's a family after a straightforward few nights or walkers using the town as a starting point for the surrounding coast and moors. The B&B sits on Church Street, within easy reach of Whitby Abbey and the attractions that draw people to this part of North Yorkshire.

Rooms are en-suite, with family rooms available for those travelling with children, and each comes with drinks provided. Reception operates around the clock, so arrival times are flexible, and free WiFi is included throughout. Parking is available on site, which is a genuine convenience in a town where space can be tight.

There's no shortage of things to do nearby: cycling and walking routes lead out from the door, and golf, fishing and watersports can all be arranged in the area. Pubs, restaurants and other eateries are close by for evenings out, along with entertainment options for a change of pace. It's a practical, well-placed choice for exploring Whitby and the coast without needing a car for every trip.

Incredibly difficult to find. Owner could provide better directions. Doors needed planing, so didn't shut properly. I was able to enter all the way to the room doors without a key. Lots of passive aggressive notes gave an escape room feel. Nowhere to sit and do hair / makeup easily. Double room with only 1 chair. Had the feeling that we were an inconvenience to the owners.

Been coming to Whitby my whole life, last minute booking for a couple of days with the family. Our room was no. 3 perfectly comfortable in the loft space of the property beds comfortable and apartment relatively clean. Good for a 2-3 nights would return.

Myself and 2 children aged 13 & 16 stayed here for one night in room 2 during the summer holidays. We arrived at about 4 pm and it was very busy in Whitby. Great location once you’re settled in, but parking was difficult so be prepared to walk 10 minutes to the accommodation.. Not ideal if you’re disabled as the stairs to the rooms are fairly steep. Room was spacious enough for the 3 of us. Unfortunately you can’t open the bathroom door from the inside as the handle does not work, this was previously mentioned by another reviewer in March, if it did shut and your alone you would have to smash it open. Paint was peeling by the window, the Wi-Fi kept dropping out, the smallest fridge in the world would not work, carpets need a deep clean as I would suspect they were new approx 2 to 3 years ago and finally the beds are of poor quality every time you moved they groaned and squealed like a …. In conclusion £165 is a bit on the expensive for what you get, if breakfast was included it would take the edge off it but it seems Whitby can demand that sort of money at peak season, but Whitby is now ticked.

Lovely place, great location. We enjoyed our stay a lot. Only complaint was the bathroom door in our room handle was broken. If I was staying there alone I wouldn't of been able to get out bc the handle was broken and kept falling off on the inside. Other than that everything was perfect. We stayed in room 2.
