A Whitby pub-hotel on Church Street serving hearty fish and chips, with harbour-view rooms and a dog-friendly terrace by the Abbey.

About Duke of York

Duke of York built its reputation on a menu of proper fish and chips and a well-stocked bar, served in a pub setting on Church Street near Whitby Abbey. The restaurant and bar are open to guests and passers-by alike, and there's an outdoor seating area that welcomes dogs, making it a natural stop whether you're staying the night or just passing through the old town.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, drinks available to order in-room, and a number of them look straight out over the harbour, which is reason enough for many to book. Family rooms are available, WiFi is free throughout, and reception operates around the clock, so late arrivals after a day exploring aren't a problem. Breakfast is included as part of the stay. Service is generally friendly and prices are fair, though things can slow down at busier times.

The location puts the abbey, harbour and town centre within easy reach, and the surrounding area is well suited to walking and cycling, with fishing and watersports also nearby. Pubs, restaurants and other eateries are all close by, and parking is available for those arriving by car.

Our family of 4 , spotted this pub from the other side of the city as the coastal pub with a river view, but with less tourists. It was very cosy in the inside, with a nice and friendly stuff, who made a Cheers writing on our Guinness froth ☺️ Food variety and quality was absolutely fantastic! Freshly cooked fish deserved our best compliments! And window views are definitely additional feature, that makes the place very special. We would definitely return again.

Beautiful room and excellent location. I came with my girl Sadie (dog) who loves the beach. The beach is on the doorstep. The room is very clean and modern. I will definitely book here again . The staff are all fantastic and very friendly. Thank you Duke of York.

Just stayed here for the first time, what a beautiful place. We booked a room with a sea view, it certainly had that. The room had everything we could need, iron & ironing board, hairdryer and a Nespresso coffee machine. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was delicious too. We will certainly be back.

Me and my partner come to Whitby a few times a year and we always come to this pub for some dinner. We where lucky to get a table by the lovely big windows looking out over the sea. We had some lovely food my partner had steak cooked perfectly. I had a butter chicken pie with rice and veg perfect flavours both left happy.
