About Highgate House

Whitby's mix of clifftop abbey, working harbour and moorland backdrop makes it one of the North Yorkshire coast's most walked-about towns, and Highgate House sits on Saint Hildas Terrace within easy reach of it all while staying tucked away from the crowds. This adults-only B&B trades on that balance of a central position and a genuinely quiet street to return to at the end of the day.

Rooms are en-suite and kept immaculately, with comfortable beds and decor that guests consistently single out as a highlight. Breakfast is a proper occasion here, with bacon sandwiches and fresh fruit brought straight to the room rather than served in a communal dining area, and the welcome from staff is warm and attentive throughout the stay. There's a garden and outdoor seating for slower mornings, free WiFi, drinks available in the room, and 24 hour reception for flexible arrivals.

Whitby Abbey and the North York Moors National Park are both close by, and the area's walking and cycling routes, golf, fishing and watersports give plenty of reason to venture out, with pubs and restaurants nearby for the evening. It's a compact, personally-run base for exploring the coast rather than a hotel with extensive facilities of its own.

We had a weekend at Highgate House, in conjunction with going to a gig in Scarborough, and I can honestly say it is one of THE nicest places we have ever stayed. The decor is just stunning, the bed is super comfortable, and the genius idea of having breakfast in the room in PJ's was perfect. No small talk, no having to get dressed for breakfast, we were told the time it would arrive, and it did bang on time, it was gorgeous, warm bacon barms, pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast plus a big pot of tea and coffee, nothing stingy about it, proper Yorkshire! The location is ideal, easy to walk into Whitby and explore, Jonathan gave us some great recommendations given for places to eat, visit, all within walking distance. We visited the Whitby Gin distillery for a tour too, worth a visit, to stock up on lovely Gin. Would go back in a heartbeat, thanks Jonathan & Louise you have a wonderful, warm, friendly and very beautiful place to stay. Highly recommended to anyone having a lovely stay in Whitby.

We had a wonderful stay at Highgate House for our first wedding anniversary at the end of April. Jonathan and Louise so were welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The house itself is stunning, and it was really interesting reading about its history. The room (we had the Winter room) was beautiful and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast (delivered to our room) was delicious and plentiful. The location is very central and Jonathan recommended lots of places to visit. We will definitely return, perhaps for a longer stay next time.

Unbelievable !! From the moment you walk in to Highgate House you experience something very special. It is ideally placed to access Whitby town centre but far enough out to have a quiet night's sleep. The place itself is pristine and we got a very warm welcome to our room which was the Summer room which in real life is even better than the photos can show. Everything is catered for and the hosts can't do enough for your stay. Breakfast is out of this world and served to your door. We definitely will be returning!!!
