What guests say
We just got married at Holbeck Ghyll and had the most incredible experience. The venue is stunning and the perfect Lake District atmosphere with a gorgeous view and quintessential English country house interior. The staff were friendly and welcoming, going above and beyond to ensure us and our guests were taken care of throughout our stay. Our wedding coordinator Caleigh was exceptional and made the whole planning process a breeze. She was such a calming, organised and warm presence on the day and really ensured that everything went exactly how we had planned it. Having exclusive use of the hotel was perfect for the small intimate wedding we had. The food was incredible and is something that our guests have been raving about since. Holbeck Ghyll is truly the perfect Lake District wedding venue and we can’t wait to visit again in years to come. Thank you for creating such a perfect wedding day, one which we will truly cherish for life! ♥️

We loved our stay at Holbeck Ghyll - a stunning location, and the quality of service is excellent. We would 100% stay again, however to ensure this review is helpful, I would flag that the standard of our room didn't match the rest of our experience - we didn't mind it, but other guests might find it sub-par. We stayed while the restaurant was closed. Location You come here for the location. It's up the hill from Lake Windermere, the grounds are large and well-kept, with a stream running along it's northern edge, with a walk into a forested area with wood anemones and wild garlic growing throughout. It also looks over sheep grazing land. We had a lake-view room at the very top of the house, and the view was breath-taking. We did the circular walk to Wansfell Pike from the grounds (as listed on their site in the walks section), and we loved that we could do this with the hotel as our starting point. Service The staff were excellent. I'd particularly like to thank Kyle who went above and beyond to provide a lovely experience at breakfast. Staff were really friendly and chatty (but I think wouldn't be intrusive if you didn't want that kind of experience). I had a great chat with another member of staff (didn't get his name, but again, super friendly) about the hotels eco-credentials (which are very good!) and about the local environment. We had breakfast included in our stay, with continental and cooked on offer. The quality was excellent and they were very accommodating. Room The hotel is very comfortable and spacious, with lots of seating areas and a bar to spend time in away from the room. Before I mention the cons, I think it's worth being very clear that the building itself is beautiful, and obviously very old, so they have a real job to keep the place modernised whilst retaining it's historic features - not an easy feat! Also, the bed was very comfortable, and the peace we experienced was perfect. However, the room was quite tired, with wallpaper peeling off the walls and there were obvious signs of wear throughout. The main issue we experienced was with the plumbing - when emptying the bath, some of the waste water would temporarily back up into the shower, and the smell was...not good. We mentioned this to the staff and they said they would look into it, so hopefully it is something they get fixed. Just to reiterate, we would definitely stay at Holbeck Ghyll again.

We recently had the pleasure of getting married at Holbeck Ghyll and each and everyone of our guests and suppliers also agreed it really was a pleasure. We decided to have exclusive use of the house for two days to make sure all of our family and friends felt relaxed and had time to enjoy our wedding, it was the best decision. We had the most amazing few days and really felt like we had all of our favourite people at our home, the team looked after us all so well and went above to make sure that our time was special. They also made sure that both days had a different feel to them and the first day being much more relaxed and then more formal on the wedding day which is exactly what we asked for. We found Holbeck Ghyll and booked before they had completed their new wedding and events space ‘the view’, the house, location, views and friendly welcome we got each time sealed the deal. Cayleigh the wedding planner has been so fantastic, honestly she is made to be a wedding planner. So organised, friendly, helpful and able to suggest all the different options to find what works best for you. There are some reviews online that really don’t like some of the rooms decor, which is dated in places, but this doesn’t take away from all of the wonderful things that Holbeck offers. Thank you so much to all the team and we can’t thank you enough for making our wedding so perfect.

Stayed as a special treat after a walking holiday — it was anything but. The bathroom had mould on the ceiling, rusted window frames, black mould in the grout and failing sealant. No duty manager was available when we complained. Staff could not help. Expedia couldn't reach the hotel either. We had to leave and pay for alternative accommodation. The hotel has refused any refund. Avoid.
