Windermere sits at the heart of the Lake District, with the lake itself around three and a half miles from the hotel and plenty of walking and cycling country on the doorstep. On the Ambleside Road above the town, The Samling Hotel makes the most of that setting, with a garden and grounds that look out over the fells.
Rooms here are generously sized and carefully put together, each with an en-suite bathroom, and there's a choice of accessible rooms too. Drinks and room service are available for those who'd rather not leave, and the restaurant is a genuine draw in its own right, pairing accomplished cooking with wide views over the surrounding countryside. What can I possibly say about the most amazing experience I’ve ever had in a hotel. The service was absolutely over the top and exemplified by Rebecca who looked after every detail of our stay. The room was great (and we had a basic room), the views were outstanding, and the food was absolutely amazing (both the gathering and Michelin menus). On top of all that their bartender made amazing cocktails. My only cons are that they could not return laundry same day, and that there was no A/C (common for this region). If I could give it six stars I would. My wife and I typically don’t stay at the same place twice, but we definitely would consider staying here again.

We’ve visited The Samling twice now, and following our second visit we were compelled to give credit where it’s due. The hotel is immaculate, with beautiful, spacious rooms, and everywhere impeccably maintained. The restaurant has the most delightful views of the lake, rolling countryside and gloriously colourful hotel grounds. The hot tub is a real treat, being private, superbly bubbly and with beautiful views of the lake (and you can order drinks to the tub as an added bonus!). But what makes this place so special are the people at The Samling, especially Rebecca and Andrew, who go out of their way to extend the warmest of welcomes and make sure you have a relaxing stay in the friendliest of ways. This hotel is 100% worth that little extra and very deserving of it too. Thank you for our wonderful stays.

The Samling is a magical retreat. We had two nights dinner bed and breakfast in a luxury double room with beautiful views and never wanted to leave. Everything was luxurious and beautiful. The food was absolutely outstanding; way above the standard of other tasting menus we have tried. We needed a special break to help us face some very challenging times ahead and the Samling ticked every single box. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. A special thanks to Nigel and Rebecca for their sensitivity and humour!
