What visitors say
Great local museum, wide range of historic items. Highly recommended. Small entrance fee of £10 for a year. No cafe on site but many nearby. Good shop. Located in large gardens also worth a visit. Is in city centre no parking, but park and ride bus stops outside.

Spent here 3 and a half hours with a brief space for coffe (at the library nearby since they dont have cafeteria) they have a really impressive couple of fossils of a pliosaur and ichtyosaur, the recently discovered Melsonby hoard, a very well explained roman section and an awesome viking exposition with and anglian iron helmet in an incredible state of conservation among other things, learnt a lot. It's 10£ wich is in the preicy range in comparison with other history museums across europe but is more than worthy, i can't give it the extra stars since the lack of cafeteria and specially and above all the lack of lockers is a mayor setback : an old lady who was waiting for the museum to open was carrying a bulky backpack and she decided to leave rather than having to visit the place with than burden. The lady at the reception was really nice. Tickets are valid for a year which is cool.

£10 per person which is allowing you to visit for another 12 months. Museum is amazing, nice walk around with lots of information and VR! You can feed a dinosaur, super fun for kids and adults. Lots of interactive stands. You can also walk (bare foot! No shoes allowed!) on Roman old brick path. Unforgettable experience. Viking jewel, ship, runes to learn and more awaits!

Very interesting exhibits, especially the Dinosaur fossils and I enjoyed learning about York’s Viking and Roman history. It was fun to write my name in Runes too! The £10 entry fee felt very reasonable given how much there is to see and absorb. I didn’t book in advance and had no issues buying an admission ticket upon arrival. I also enjoyed relaxing in the beautiful and well kept museum gardens.
