What guests say
This is a stunning, spotlessly clean hotel overlooking a park, just a 10-minute walk from York city centre. Our luxury room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and had an excellent walk-in shower, but customer service issues ruined our stay. Having reflected on it, I am deducting another star because the experience simply was not up to par, and we would not stay here again. Key Feedback & Tips for Guests: Toddler Accommodations: No travel cots are provided, so our toddler had to share our bed. Accessibility: Despite requesting a ground-floor room for our pram, we were placed on an upper floor with no lift, forcing us to carry it up two flights of stairs. Temperature & Noise: The room was stuffy and warm (staff provided a fan, but it stayed hot), and we heard doors slamming and noise until 11:00 PM. Signs reminding guests to close doors quietly would help. Amenities: Our TV remote was broken, so we couldn't use the TV. Check-In Issues: The biggest downside was an unadvertised £100 security deposit policy. The card machine rejected our cards for the deposit—despite just taking payment for the room balance on one of them. After 15 stressful minutes on a hot day with a tired toddler, we were asked for £100 cash. We eventually resolved it by having a family member give their card details over the phone to hold for the deposit. Demanding cash or forcing us to wait instead of using common sense to let us rest and resolve it later was unacceptable. Clearer communication about deposit rules and better flexibility when technology fails are badly needed. Summary: A gorgeous, well-maintained hotel in a great location, but severely let down by poor customer service. Double-check your room allocation and deposit requirements before arriving!

Incredible location on a same, beautiful historic street opposite the Museum Gardens (very short walk from the station and the town centre). Very comfy beds, spacious room and sofa. Shower great. Receptionists lovely. Very very well decorated. But this is simply not "luxury" as they advertise. We had booked for our wedding night and we were hoping to treat ourselves to one night of "luxury", but this was not it. The breakfast was absolutely dire (we saw other people describe the breakfast as "amazing" on reviews here... I don't know if they have changed suppliers since that review!). The pain au chocolat was like one from a corner shop, very cardboard-y and cost £4.50. The coffee was from a basic machine... like in a corner shop. The granola was so basic - over £8 for some rolled oats, a bit of yoghurt and badly presented dollop of berry compote - no fruits or anything. As there's no breakfast room, it's presented on a single tray. The bathroom was quite small. No view whatsoever - just a ground floor yard and a fire exit staircase - and this was a "Bay Suite" room. Very thin walls (could hear the people in the room next to us) and very creaky floors above (appreciate this is an old building but it did mean we were kept up later than expected because of the people above walking a lot and every time they went to the bathroom).

I think the hotel is confused, is it luxury boutique or a bed and breakfast? (without the breakfast) On the good side: The location is magnificent, a quick walk across the magnificent Museum Gardens into the city. The view of the gatehouse and the church was superb. The bathroom was lovely with a super shower whilst the bed was ok, but nothing more. The breakfast (which is extra, but no complaints as this was made clear) arrived hot and exactly on time. The late check out was a lovely extra (again and extra but made clear and not expensive) meant there wasn't a rush to leave. But the negatives: The room looked tired, if I'm honest, broken light fitting and the carpets were stained and marked in places, both in the room and in the hallways. The signs on the doors, about wiping your feet, showed this is an issue the hotel is aware of. Our 'welcome' at reception by the member of staff was hardly welcoming, not rude but certainly cold. As a guest I don't want to hear there personal opinion about the current hotel the "newer isn't always better". Unfortunately the room was also noisy, I know management can't stop people smoking right outside the front door but most of the evening it was like a chimney and we could hear there conversations so we'll we could have joined in! Sadly we could also have talked with the people in the corridor as they passed. Especially as we seemed to be on the main passage through our floor. The matters weren't reported at the time as the member of staff on duty didn't inspire any for of faith that they would do anything or be interested. Then by the time we left it was a moot point. So in summary the hotel was ok but could be better and so I wouldn't be going back.
