About Safestay York

Privacy curtains on the beds are one of the small touches that set Safestay York apart, fitted into a historic building on Micklegate in the heart of the city. With only 23 rooms, it has a compact, easy-going feel rather than the scale of a big chain hotel, and the building's older character comes through in the setting itself.

Rooms are en-suite and air-conditioned, with free WiFi throughout, and breakfast is available on site along with a bar for an evening drink. Some of the bathrooms run on the smaller side, but the rooms themselves are kept clean and comfortable. Staff are on hand to help with local tips and practical questions, which makes settling in straightforward.

Micklegate puts guests within easy reach of the city's pubs, restaurants and other eateries, with plenty of entertainment nearby too. It's a convenient base for exploring York on foot, with the day-to-day essentials covered and the rest of the city just a short walk away.

The placement for this hostel is just amazing it’s not too centred but it’s a perfect walk (about 10 minutes) from the shambles and tourist like spots in York! The bathrooms were great and the rooms are spacious with comfy beds! I will say the best part of my stay has to be how great the staff are, I didn’t catch her name but especially the woman who was working the evenings of my stay. She was so friendly and chatty and she had a nact for working with people honestly! She doesn’t take peoples cheek or crap but she’s very helpful and friendly! Would totally recommend this place to anyone :)

I have no words to describe how incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful the staff were, especially Kinley. From the moment we arrived, she made us feel genuinely welcomed and at home. Her warm personality, kindness, and enthusiasm truly made our stay exceptional. The hotel itself was spotless, beautifully maintained, and everything was kept to a very high standard. Our room was immaculate on arrival, with everything perfectly tidy and well organised. The beds were extremely comfortable, making for a very restful and enjoyable stay. It was clear that a lot of care goes into maintaining the cleanliness and comfort of the hotel. Kinley truly went above and beyond by giving us a wonderful introduction to York’s history, which gave us the perfect head start for exploring the city. Her recommendations and local insights made our trip even more enjoyable and memorable. It’s rare to come across such genuinely caring hospitality, where both the staff and the hotel itself exceed expectations. This was a true 5-star experience, and we would happily return and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting York!

This hostel was a lifesaver for me after a 17-hour journey home, when my last train from York to Harrogate was cancelled. Thank goodness there were two beds in the women’s dorm. I checked in late at night, so I didn’t get to see the room. The shower is combined with the toilet and is very small. There’s nowhere to put your things; there seems to be only one hook. There’s no ventilation. I had the bottom bunk with curtains in a bunk bed. It was quite comfortable. Breakfast was available, but I left early. The staff were very friendly.
