About The Grand, York

The Grand occupies the Edwardian building put up in 1906 as the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, a Grade II* listed pile of red brick and stone that sits just inside the city walls near York railway station. It was converted to a hotel in 2010 and is the only property in York rated at five stars. The scale of the original building is still obvious in the marble staircase, the panelled corridors and the very high ceilings of the public rooms.

There are just over 200 bedrooms and suites across the original building and a newer wing. Rooms are large by city-centre standards, with proper writing desks, heavy curtains and marble bathrooms; the best of them look across the walls towards York Minster. Suites in the older part of the building keep original fireplaces and sash windows. Air conditioning, a Nespresso machine and a decent-sized bath are standard throughout.

Facilities are the main reason people choose The Grand over smaller York hotels. There is a spa in the former vaults with a pool, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms, a gym, and a working cookery school where guests can book half-day classes. Eating is split between Legacy for a longer, more formal dinner, The Rise for brasserie food and breakfast, and the 1906 Bar for cocktails. Eight meeting and event rooms make it a common choice for conferences and weddings.

The location suits anyone arriving by train, as the station is a two-minute walk, and the Minster, the Shambles and the museums are all within fifteen minutes on foot. It works well for couples wanting a spa break, for business travellers who need meeting space, and for families who value the pool. Those after something small and characterful will find it rather large and corporate in places, but the standard of service is consistent and parking is available on site.

Beautiful stay. We booked the grand heritage suite for a few days and it was brilliant. The staffing team were so helpful, polite and made us feel so welcome. The room service was on point and the breakfasts made getting out of that ridiculously comfortable bed that bit easier. Everything from valet parking to spa access was explained and made extremely clear days before check in. Great hotel with great staff. Really can't wait to visit again.

A very comfy stay with spacious rooms and incredibly friendly staff. It was also air-conditioned which was much needed during our stay. Ian the doorman was exceptional with great local knowledge and a very friendly a cheerful attitude. The whole doorstaff were extra accommodating for my partners wheelchair and it was really appreciated. The wheelchair accessibility was good all round. There is a couple of small lifts but there was always friendly staff around to help. There was also plenty of room to manoeuvre inside the restaurant and throughout the corridors.

Genuine 5 star hotel, so many times in the UK service falls short, not here, you get what you pay for. The hotel staff were wonderful with our 7 year old daughter, Vicky in the bar was lovely. All areas of the hotel were immaculate on our visit. Lovely bar area. Breakfast was very high quality even as a buffet. Hotel next to train station with parking and valet parking available, really well placed for exploring the city centre. Very happy with our visit, we will be going again. Genuine 5 star service. Spa area very relaxing and very clean.
