About The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel

Deep in Great Langdale, with the fells rising straight up on either side, The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel sits at the point where the valley road runs out and the walking routes begin. It's the kind of setting that shapes everything about the place: mountain views from the windows, boots by the door, and a garden that looks straight out onto the surrounding hills.

Rooms are en-suite, some set up as family rooms, with the simple comforts you want after a day on the fells rather than anything fussy. There's free WiFi and drinks in the room, and a packed lunch can be arranged for those heading out early. The bar and restaurant are the heart of the hotel, serving pies, fish and chips and hearty breakfasts alongside a good range of local beers, all at fair prices, and the staff keep things warm and welcoming even when the pub is full of wet walkers. Dogs are genuinely welcome throughout.

Beyond the front door there's little but fell, ghyll and sky, with walking routes leading straight out of Great Langdale, along with cycling, fishing and watersports within reach for those who want a change from walking boots. Free on-site parking makes it an easy base whether you're staying a night or using it as a stopping point between longer routes.

What more could you want? A location in the heart of the Lake District stunningly set in Langdale valley in a quieter part of the Lakes. Lovely outside area with plenty of seating, great choice beer with local options including Bowness Bay, Loweswater and other regularly changing. Serve up.bar food at lunch and also evening meals. Also serves as a hotel although I have not stayed over. Despite it remoteness it is very popular and a start point for many walks.

Location superb!! Food excellent!! Service awful! Zero welcome or greeting upon arrival. Slow service. Other tables who arrived after we had ordered and sat down recieved there food and finished it whilst we continued to wait and wait and wait! 50 minutes later, I asked what was happening. We were told someone would check in our order. Another 15 minutes went by, I chased again then finally our food was brought to the table with zero apology or acknowledgement! Clearly our ploughman's lunch, and side salad had been forgotten or the order had been communicated to the kitchen! Mistakes happen, but the attitude of the staff was shocking! Given 3 stars based upon food and location. NOT for the staff or customer service.

AVOID BUYING FOOD/DRINK. Myself and a friend or mine popped in today for some food and a drink and we regret it. We both had fish and chips and my friend had a drink, the fish and chips were vile, both fishes came soggy and soaked in grease and the fish tasted out of date not to mention the size of it, it was more like half a fish! And I have only just realised that I was overcharged for the drink - there are multiple pubs down the road which are much nicer. The only good side to visiting this place is the views of the hills, they are absolutely amazing.

In my top 5 of walkers bars in the UK, in the same ranks as the clachaig in the highlands. Food, atmosphere and location are perfect. Bar wait times are a bit long but it's almost a given and it's worth it, everyone loves the ODG!
