About Thorney How
Thorney How suits walking groups, cycling parties and anyone after a low-key, budget-conscious base rather than a polished hotel stay. Set on rural grounds near Grasmere, within reach of Easedale Tarn and Helm Crag, it's built for people who want to spend their days outdoors and come back to somewhere simple and communal.
The eight rooms are flexible in layout, including bunk-style options that work well for families or groups travelling together, and each has an en-suite bathroom. There's a shared kitchen for those who'd rather cook their own meals, along with a garden, picnic area and outdoor seating for relaxing afterwards. Bike storage and free on-site parking make it easy to arrive by car or on two wheels, and pets are welcome too.
Beyond the grounds, the surrounding area is geared towards walking and cycling, with fishing, watersports and a golf course also nearby, plus pubs and restaurants within reach for evenings out. It's a straightforward, sociable sort of place, well suited to those prioritising access to the fells over five-star comforts.
What guests say
Large self catering accommodation, takes a lot of heating in the living/dining room in winter. Be prepared to buy lots of logs/coal. Perfect for a weeks walking with family. Several walks from the door.

We have had the best experience and our stay was wonderful from start to finish. We found parking easy - which is always a great start to the trip. Inside you will find cosy/ country/ zen interior which is really spacious and comfortable. Even though the place is spacious, the temperature was right, I felt comfortable throughout our stay But what really made our stay special was the people. I have left a sentiment piece of jewellery in the room and I’ve rang and asked for help the next day. Owner (Mark) has responded very quickly and was very supportive in trying to get the item back to us. His cleaning team (Debbie) were also fantastic in responding to our query - best and most importantly we have found the missing item and I can’t thank you enough for all your help. I would highly recommend and if you will choose this place - you will not regret it. Thank you very much once again

Scenic location. A little off the beaten track but that's some of its appeal. Bit of a uneven entrance and tight turn. But excellent walking access to Coast to coast path and other hills. Village centre a pleasant stroll away. House was warm especially the 1st floor shower room (powered shower) apart from the ground floor bathroom off of the utility which wasn't very warm at all. Only a towel rail to heat. The small desk work area between the kitchen and hallway was very useful for us. One criticism, I think the kitchen.and desk area would benefit from a door to the utility for warmth. There clearly was one there at sometime. Otherwise when you open the 'front' door to utility, the kitchen and work/desk area are open to the cold air!

This was a real find. Tucked away off the beaten track - initially a backpackers hostel it now has several hotel rooms too - these have been decorated to a good standard with modern ensuite shower and toilet. Beautiful views of the mountains. Staff very helpful and accommodating. Breakfast was substantial. There is a nice bar offering a range of hot and cold beverages. Small dinner menu offered and fun movie nights. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended.
