Bear Cottage

Photo: David Page

Bear Cottage opens directly into a single open-plan space where the living area, dining zone and kitchen flow together. The focal point is an original brick fireplace with a working wood burner, positioned above a comfortable sofa. One step down from the entrance, this ground floor arrangement means you can cook, eat and relax without leaving the main room. Upstairs, a narrow staircase leads to a bedroom with a kingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom with bath and shower.

The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking—electric oven, induction hob, dishwasher and all the basics—rather than the usual holiday cottage provisions. Logs for the burner are supplied along with heating, wi-fi, bed linen and towels. Out back, an enclosed garden with courtyard gives you a private outdoor space, and parking is a short walk away on the road.

Nayland village sits within the Dedham Vale National Landscape, surrounded by the countryside that inspired Constable. The riverside pub is within walking distance, as are local shops and a butcher. The cottage suits two people seeking somewhere to settle for a few days, though the narrow staircase is not suitable for those with mobility limitations or children who need supervision on stairs.

Booked Bear cottage, then looked at reviews on here was slightly concerned by one individuals comments however, it is one of the most idyllic, beautiful, romantic cottages. My wife and I have ever stayed at. The local pub which is a five minute walk is wonderful, we dined there twice. The local area has lots to offer and the cottage is great place to explore from. Hopefully my pictures will say 1000 words. Enjoy! My wife is already looking to book again!

Stayed here for a weekend away from London - what a sweet little cottage! This place is full of charm, its an old property so comes with all the quirks of staying in a listed building - so much character! The village is quiet and picturesque, countryside walks and stops at local pubs - ideal break away from the city. Highly recommend!
