There are more sheep than people in Wales, they say, and at Nant y Cyrtiau – a spacious Gwynedd smallholding on the edge of Snowdonia National Park – you'll be sharing your stay with hens, ducks, horses and a flock of friendly sheep who are quite happy to be fussed over. The owners value peace over profit, limiting numbers to just a handful of pitches at any one time, ten minutes' drive from the lakeside town of Bala. You're welcome to help feed the hens and collect their eggs for a fresh breakfast, and well-behaved dogs can join you, with a fenced area provided for short spells if you're heading out without them.

Being a proper rural place, facilities are minimal – a compost toilet with a view is the extent of it – but there are many ways to improvise: collect firewood from the woods, keep your wine cool in the stream, and source water from the spring (bottled water is supplied if it runs dry). It's back-to-basics camping at its most authentic, with mountain biking, canoeing and fishing all within easy reach.
