Plas Yn Dre has been run as a restaurant by the same family since 1990, and added nine guest bedrooms during a 2017 renovation of the Grade II listed building it occupies on Bala's High Street. The result carries Visit Wales' full five-star accreditation, an unusually high grade for a town-centre property of this size.
The bedrooms mix traditional features of the old building with contemporary furnishings, and the restaurant itself remains the heart of the operation, serving fresh, locally sourced Welsh food alongside a snug bar and a library-style lounge for a quieter drink after dinner.
Its High Street position puts it within a few minutes' walk of Llyn Tegid and the town's shops, and well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout, making it a comfortable base for walkers and watersports visitors who want a genuinely smart room without leaving the town centre.

We’ve visited several times this week, and every single visit has been outstanding. The food has been consistently excellent – beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and clearly made with care. Every meal we’ve had has been superb. Well done Chef! What really sets this place apart, though, is the staff. Every member of the team has been friendly, welcoming, professional, and genuinely attentive. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and they make you feel valued from the moment you walk through the door. They are a real credit to the restaurant and have played a huge part in making us return again and again. It’s rare to find somewhere that gets everything right, but this restaurant does exactly that. Fantastic food, exceptional service, and a wonderful atmosphere every time. Highly recommended, and we’ll definitely be back many more times in the future.

We had an absolutely amazing visit to Plas yn Dre in Bala. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we ended up chatting for what felt like hours (in the best possible way!) They were so warm, helpful and knowledgeable, offering us lovely insights into the local area as well as great suggestions for things to see and do nearby. The whole visit felt relaxed, personal and genuinely enjoyable. And definitely ask the manager for one of his Dark ’n’ Stormy cocktails, it’s well worth it! Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and if we visit North Wales again, Plas yn Dre will definitely be somewhere we’ll be eager to return to. Highly recommended!

We came for a Sunday Roast and we’re not let down, excellent portion sizes. Lamb, chicken, beef or nut roast. They have gluten free options, which are the same but just without the Yorkshire pudding. Very lovely staff and dog friendly restaurant.

We were down from Newcastle staying in Bala and visited Plas Yn Dre multiple times. Each time we were welcomed by the staff and made to feel like we were chatting with friends! Some of the loveliest people we have met. Good drinks and also lovely Sunday dinner & general menu. Would recommend and will return in the future!
