About The Oriental - Guest House

Breakfast and a well-stocked bar set the tone at The Oriental - Guest House, a nine-room B&B housed in a Regency townhouse at 9 Oriental Place, Brighton. Guests can start the day properly before heading out, then return to unwind in a lounge with a distinctly playful edge and a cocktail bar that leans towards the trendy rather than traditional.

Rooms come with drinks available on request, and practical extras run to free WiFi, laundry service, luggage storage and 24 hour reception, so arrivals and departures at odd hours are no trouble. There's a concierge on hand for local tips and bookings, meeting rooms for those mixing business with a seaside stay, and pets are welcome too.

The location puts Brighton Pier and the Royal Pavilion within easy reach, making this a sound base for exploring the seafront and the city's Regency landmarks. With 97 ratings averaging 4.7 out of 5, it's a guest house that consistently pleases, built around a townhouse setting with genuine character rather than a generic city-centre stay.

Expected better for the price. Paid almost £280 for two nights. The room itself was fine, bed was comfy and clean. Bathroom is where things got questionable - definitely not painted with water resistant paint, so watermarks show everywhere and if you touch the walls around the shower it actually comes off on your hands - not a great start! Shower temperature knob was broken when we arrived so struggled to use it that evening - water was set way too hot. Water pressure is also very low. They did send a plumber once it was reported, but he was unfortunately unable to do more than turn the temperature down a bit as there were actually components missing. Advertised on google as all rooms being air conditioned, but it definitely isn't - we had one (very small) desk fan we found in the wardrobe. Not great during a hot weekend, and the sash windows are screwed down in such a way that they can only be opened about 3 inches so airflow is quite poor. Fire door is badly fitted with gaps all down one side and underneath so the corridor light is very bright, and the blackout blinds aren't very well fitted either so it's broad daylight in the room as soon as the sun comes up. Admittedly a good location and easily walkable to the town, pier and main attractions, but we were definitely expecting better maintenance for the price we paid. Also near impossible to talk to a real human being - all communication to MyGetaways is via AI chatbot on the phone or WhatsApp, so be prepared for a bunch of generated responses.
