Camping in Brodick

Arran's varied terrain, from the granite peaks of the north to the gentler farmland of the south, makes it a genuinely rewarding island for camping, and Brodick's position by the ferry terminal makes it a natural base to arrive, stock up and head out from. Wild camping is generally permitted across most of Scotland under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which allows lightweight backpack camping on unenclosed land for a night or two, done responsibly and away from roads, buildings and enclosed farmland; on Arran this opens up options in the hills around Goatfell and along quieter stretches of coast, though established campsites remain the easier and more comfortable choice for most visitors, particularly with a tent full of gear off a ferry.

Formal campsites and camping pods are dotted around the island rather than concentrated in Brodick itself, with options within a short drive or bus ride offering showers, laundry and better shelter than a wild pitch, which matters given how quickly weather can turn on an island exposed to the Firth of Clyde. Glamping has also taken hold on Arran, with pods, wigwams and safari-style tents giving a step up in comfort while keeping the same views of hills and sea that draw campers here in the first place.

Late spring through early autumn is the most comfortable window, with May and June often the driest and least midge-prone months; midges are a real consideration on Arran as elsewhere in the Scottish Highlands and islands, and tend to be worst on still, humid evenings in July and August, particularly near woodland and slow-moving water, so repellent and a head net are sensible additions to any packing list. Whatever the season, Arran's combination of mountain, moor, forest and shoreline within such a small area means campers based near Brodick can reach a genuinely different landscape every day without moving far.
