About Lincoln House Hotel

Lincoln House occupies a pair of Victorian townhouses at 118-120 Cathedral Road, in the run of villas that has been Cardiff's guest-house quarter since the city was still shipping coal. It holds three Visit Wales stars and is family-run, with the sort of long-standing top-of-the-rankings reputation on review sites that comes from consistency rather than novelty. Rooms start at around £95 a night including breakfast.

Bedrooms are en-suite and furnished in keeping with the age of the house — some have four-posters, most have high ceilings and tall sash windows. Breakfast is cooked to order and included, wi-fi is free throughout, and there is off-street parking, which is a genuine advantage on a road where spaces are scarce. The public rooms retain their original fireplaces and cornices.

The setting suits visitors who want a residential base rather than a city-centre one. Sophia Gardens is across the road, Bute Park begins a few minutes away, and the walk into the centre takes about twenty minutes along the river and through the park to the back of Cardiff Castle. Pontcanna's cafés, delis and restaurants are within easy reach for dinner without needing to go into town.

King suite is “king” indeed. We were also happy with the breakfast: nothing fancy, but plenty of everything in a warm home-like atmosphere. A couple of other details also left a lasting pleasant impression. Kudos to the owners/management. Although it’s not right in the city center, we would still recommend it: worth the price, and you might also enjoy the walk in the neighbourhood. A solid 5/5 overall.

Wonderful stay. Welcomed warmly by Carl, who took the time to give us an orientation to Cardiff. The room was on the ground floor. It was spacious, quiet and faced a side street, so private as well. They serve a hot breakfast to order as well as a continental buffet. Very close to Bute Park, which was a pleasure to stroll through. We were within walking distance to the Castle, Shopping are and the boat launch to Cardiff Bay.

This hotel is nice enough but completely unprepared for even mild summer temperatures. We were upgraded to an upstairs room. Little did we know the room was over 30C every night and no WiFi. We tried our best to stick it out. We even asked for a better fan but the answer was sorry, you get what you get. We eventually had to move to a different hotel for some relief. They offered no refund or even basic sympathy. One star.

Lincoln House was amazing. We just walked in off the street and they gave us an amazing room. They looked after us very well and made sure we had everything we needed. Could not recommend them enough.
