What guests say
I honestly don't understand some of the negative reviews. Before booking, I took the time to read the hotel information and everything was clearly explained, including the parking charges and the fact that it is a city centre hotel. If you book a hotel in the middle of a city, you should expect some noise at weekends. The hotel itself is full of character and history. Yes, it's an older building, but that's part of its charm. The hotel was spotlessly clean during my stay and it was clear that improvements are ongoing throughout the property. What really stood out was the team. Every member of staff I encountered was friendly, welcoming and couldn't do enough to help. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice and everything was hot, fresh and well presented. A great way to start the day. The free WiFi worked well and the location is ideal for exploring Carlisle, with shops, restaurants and attractions all within easy walking distance. I particularly enjoyed reading the history board near the lift and taking in some of the original features, including the beautiful ceiling tiles which really showcase the building's heritage. If you're looking for a modern chain hotel, this may not be for you. However, if you appreciate history, character, a fantastic city centre location, good food and genuinely helpful staff, I would highly recommend staying here.

I had a wonderful stay at the County Hotel. My room was very spacious, spotlessly clean, and everything was fully functional. The hotel staff was incredibly pleasant and welcoming throughout my visit. One of the biggest advantages is the location, as the hotel is conveniently situated right near the train station. To top it all off, the breakfast was absolutely excellent with a great selection. I would definitely stay here again!

Stayed here on Saturday night, with 2 fantastic other couples. Brilliant friends. Great location. Big rooms. Occasionally a little bit of street noise could be heard but nothing too bad. Fantastic breakfast. Much better than the Halston.

Do Not Stay Here — Filthy, Unsafe, and Shockingly Mismanaged. This is a genuine warning to anyone thinking of booking The County Hotel in Carlisle. I booked a basic twin room priced at £155 for a room that was so disgusting I refused to stay. The room was tiny, the door didn’t close properly, and the bathroom was filthy. There was mould, damp, and an overpowering unhealthy smell throughout the room and corridors. It felt unsafe to breathe in. The hotel is severely neglected and the conditions are unacceptable for the price they’re charging. Management, Arvan Handa and Naveen Handa, who are responsible for the state of this place should be ashamed of allowing guests to walk into rooms like this. I walked straight back out. Avoid this hotel. It is not safe, not clean, and absolutely not worth the money. If zero was a star rating that would be too high!!!!!
