What visitors say
Lovely little village setting. Nice relaxed layout with the shop, house and grounds. Ticket lasts a year but not sure you'd be back more than once unless you lived local. Understandably it isn't a large site but is nicely laid out and you are invited to just take your time and even just relax in the grounds which on a hot day is most welcome. Lovely little souvenir shop. Everyone was very polite and helpful.

Book ahead and get scones in the pub across the road. The ticket is valid for 1 year. There are a few furniture items and a ring and letters of Jane’s. The garden is lovely. They found wall paper scraps in closets from Jane’s time in the house and re-created it to adorn the walls inside. We have also been to the house Jane died in and her place of rest in Winchester Cathedral as well as her house in Bath (less impressive than this one).

A visit to Chawton, and especially to the former home of Jane Austen, is one of those rare experiences that feels both deeply personal and historically significant at the same time. From the moment you arrive in this quiet Hampshire village, there is an immediate sense of stepping back into another century. The landscape is gentle and timeless, with soft green fields and charming cottages that seem almost unchanged since Austen’s era. It is easy to understand why this place became the heart of her creative life. Inside the house, now known as the Jane Austen’s House Museum, there is an extraordinary feeling of intimacy. The rooms are modest yet full of meaning, each corner holding echoes of thought, imagination, and quiet determination. Standing in the very space where some of the greatest novels in English literature were written creates a powerful emotional connection not loud or overwhelming, but deeply reflective and moving. What makes the experience truly special is the sense of presence. It feels as if her creativity still lingers in the air, not as something distant or abstract, but as something alive and gently enduring. The simplicity of the home only enhances its beauty, reminding visitors that greatness often grows in the most unassuming places. Walking through the garden adds another layer of peace. It is serene, delicate, and beautifully in harmony with the house itself a place where one can imagine long moments of thought, observation, and inspiration. Overall, Jane Austen’s house in Chawton is not just a museum; it is a journey into the inner world of a remarkable writer. It deserves every bit of its five-star reputation and leaves a lasting impression that stays with you long after you leave.

A trip back in time. Good feeling walking around. The house still keeps most of the old times frame. I did love the floor and the bedroom. Walkable around with wheelchairs except the first floor. The best in all is that the ticket it is usable for a year. The village has beautiful houses. Good place to visit ♥️
