I do love visiting local museums and seeing that Chester was a Roman town, it's no surprise that there is a lot of Roman artifacts! There is a particularly good display of Roman alter and memorial stones, and a video explaining the story behind one of the memorial stones but with a spooky twist. There is also a video about the development of Chester and lots of information about the Roman settlement and amphitheatre. As with lots of local museums I have visited, there is a natural history section and an art gallery. We very nearly missed the house, 20 Castle Street, that is attached to the museum and has reconstructed room displays from different periods in time. Free to visit but donations appreciated.

I would recommend coming to the Grosvenor Museum and watch the 10min video before exploring the rest of Chester, if you're im Chester for the History, the museum covers from the Roman Deva 1st century AD, the Saxon's, mediaeval period through to the Victorians. Visit the silver display, it is remarkable. Then go onto the tour of Chester. Start with the Roman amphitheater and go onto the wall, walk to the Cathedral and visit the Information centre next to town hall

The Grosvenor Museum in Chester offers a captivating journey through the city's rich and diverse history, from its Roman origins to the present day. Housed in a grand Victorian building, the museum's extensive collections showcase the archaeology, art, and natural history of Chester and its surrounding areas. With its engaging exhibits and informative displays, the Grosvenor Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who have shaped this historic city. One of the highlights of the Grosvenor Museum is its impressive collection of Roman artifacts, including tombstones, pottery, and weaponry. These objects offer a tangible connection to Chester's Roman past, when the city was known as Deva Victrix, a major Roman fortress. The museum also features exhibits on Chester's medieval history, including displays on the city's famous Rows, unique covered walkways that date back to the 13th century. In addition to its historical collections, the Grosvenor Museum also boasts a fine art collection, featuring works by local and regional artists. The museum's natural history exhibits showcase the diverse flora and fauna of Cheshire, from the wetlands of the Dee Estuary to the woodlands of Delamere Forest. With its wide range of collections and exhibits, the Grosvenor Museum offers something for everyone, whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply curious about the world around you. A visit to the Grosvenor Museum is a must for anyone interested in exploring the history and culture of Chester.

Picture the scene. You're walking 🚶‍♂️ through Chester, admiring the splendour all around you and it starts raining 🌧. What's a person to do? Being a Boro (Ironopolis) boy there's a possibility of rust setting in so I popped into the Grosvenor Museum. Shrewd move. They suggest a three quid contribution but don't push it. I, hang my head in shame, did my usual thing and treated it as a freebie. Lots of local history to be found, some splendid artwork from all manner of genres, and some helpful staff. If you're in Chester and it starts raining..... (or just pop in regardless of the weather!)
