About Mercure Chester Abbots Well Hotel

A pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room set Mercure Chester Abbots Well Hotel apart from the average city stay, giving guests a proper reason to linger after a day out. The hotel sits on Whitchurch Road within reach of Chester city centre, Grosvenor Park and the Shropshire Union Canal, making it a practical base for exploring on foot or by water.

The hotel has 126 rooms, including family and accessible options, all with en-suite bathrooms; some rooms are more traditional in style and could do with updating, though they're kept clean and comfortable. Breakfast is varied and well-regarded, and there's a restaurant, bar and snack bar on site for other meals, with room service and packed lunches available too. Staff are consistently described as friendly and attentive.

Beyond the leisure facilities, there's a gym, garden, picnic area and outdoor seating, plus meeting rooms and business services for those combining work with the trip. The hotel welcomes pets, offers free on-site parking, and is close to a golf course and local pubs and restaurants for evenings out.

We had a very comfortable stay at Abbots Well. The staff were attentive and helpful and the rooms comfortable. We particularly appreciated the half board option as there didn’t seem to be a lot of dining options in the immediate area. We would happily choose to stay here again. There were two small issues that we had during our stay. The first was that the half board option only includes some of the items on the menu, not all of them (eg all of the burgers are excluded). While the staff were helpful, this was odd and I’m not certain we would have taken this option if we’d known. The second - and I acknowledge that we were staying during a pretty extreme heatwave - was that the hot water in our room took more than seven minutes to start flowing. I guess all the other guests were using it too. We did however appreciate the fans that were placed in each room.

Definitely not a 4 star hotel. Would struggle with a 3 in some areas. Somewhat negligent on some basic areas of maintenance particularly in my room. Chipped bath and shower screen hanging off. But to be fair overall the place was clean. The Spa is obviously run on a budget. It was hotter in the pool than the steam room and more. That said the individual children’s swimming lessons given by competent staff are commendable. £7.45 for a pint of lager in the Northeast is a bit cheeky. The underlying neglect of condition are definitely attributable to the area and corporate policies and model. But you get what you pay for. BTW, extremely close to the North Wales Expressway feeder to the M53. Ear plugs are compulsory even if you are a moderate sleeper. Finally, all of the staff were very friendly, helpful and professional so thank you to them all.

Lovely hotel with great facilities. Very friendly staff. A little dated in the pool area but nothing too major (could do with water dispenser by pool/sauna). Rooms very comfortable and clean with decent shower gel and hair washing dispensers.. No aircon so i can imagine it can get very hot but other than that the hotel is great. Food choices for breakfast are good and vege options available. Def worth a visit and we will be back.

We took our 3 year old granddaughter for two nights, back home today. She loved the pool so much fun. Great service in restaurant from Jimmy and team. Food was not good, but the service was wonderful. Room 150 had a constant noise throughout the nights.. sounded like an issue with air conditioning or something similar, it never stopped a buzzing noise. Our granddaughter asked us what it was? I mentioned this at the reception when we left this morning. Breakfast was good selection, but evening meals were awful. We ate out locally last night in The Chester Cat and that was fabulous. But overall the hotel is ok. Mattresses badly stained. Thank you Jimmy and team for making us feel welcomed in restaurant.
