Gylly Beach View

Photo: Will Thom

Falmouth's working harbour, independent shops and restaurants are within easy reach on foot, and the coastal path starts practically outside. Gyllyngvase Beach has a café and is the nearest swim, while Swanpool's nature reserve is a short walk further along the shore. The town hosts regular sailing events and festivals throughout the year, and a small ferry runs to St Mawes and Flushing if you want to explore across the water.

The penthouse occupies the third and fourth floors of a contemporary building with lift access. Downstairs is an open-plan living and dining space with doors onto a balcony overlooking Queen Mary Gardens and the bay, plus a separate sitting room with its own television, and a kitchen equipped for proper cooking. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms are upstairs: the main has a zip-and-link bed that can be arranged as singles, and the other two are king-size, each with an ensuite shower room. A family bathroom with a bath completes the space. Essentials like heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are covered; there is private parking for two cars, and a cot and highchair are available if needed. No smoking throughout.

We booked a 2 week stay - have been before and can recommend it, although the very high summer prices will, of course, put many off. Starting with the car parking and no complaints here, the apartment has an allocated space with the additional bonus being it's covered. Moving to the door into the apartment block, it's key coded (they send this in advance, so again, no problem with this), but the door doesn't close essily so, sadly, it's simply left open. Something that needs the management company to repair I guess. On entering the apartment, you immediately have the bathroom to your left, and slightly further on a small corridor to the left that takes you past the cupboard with the washing machine, drier, hoover, etc. into the second bedroom. This has two single beds, bedside tables and a built-in wardrobe, and is clean, tidy, and comfortable*. Continue down the corridor and take a left, and you come to the first bedroom. Like the second bedroom, this again is clean, tidy, and comfortable*, The two differences are that as the "master room", this has a double bed and an ensuite shower room. Back out in the main corridor, going through the door straight ahead takes you into the combined living room, dining room, and kitchen. This has a three seat sofa, two armchairs, and a table with 4 seats along with a TV - comfortable, but the seats are quite low, so those with mobility problems be warned! The kitchen has a built-in fridge freezer, oven, microwave, hob, sink, and surprisingly, a wine fridge. The room also has French doors leading to a small outside balcony with a small table and chairs; more than handy for the days with better weather (we are there in February as a note). Just a couple thing of note really; firstly he cooker hood - the filter really needs a wash (come on team, drop it in the dishwasher!) and similarly the top of the hood needs a wipe. I'd have thought this was part of the cleaning undertaken before the next occupant takes residence in all honesty, but noting the amount of dust and debris underneath the coffee table, sofa's and chairs (found when hoovering through) the term "cleaning" does seem more of a question than something which is actively being done. Come back Covid times for this! Also the washer drier needed its filters cleaning; all done but again when you leave "cleaners" come in .... what for, a coffee and chin wag? The toaster is "new" but they have opted for a very cheap one ... come on guys, buy something half decent at least! So there it is, and overall despite the above couple of "rants" the place is wholly recommended. As I say, the summer months are very expensive so a period we tend to avoid, but otherwise its comfortable and has an excellent location and, as mentioned, comes with parking for one car which is a huge bonus. I'd take a look and give it a go!
