Photo: The Lookout Cottages

Buxton sits at the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, surrounded by moorland and walking country that draws people back season after season. The Lookout is a single-bedroom apartment in the town centre, recently refurbished and kept to just two guests, making it a straightforward base for couples exploring the area on foot or by car.

Inside, the single bedroom and bathroom are accompanied by a kitchen equipped for proper cooking rather than heating up takeaways. Bed linen and towels are provided, along with electricity; you'll need to arrange your own wi-fi if you want it. There's a pub within a mile, and the town itself has independent cafes and restaurants within walking distance. The main appeal is the location: you can step outside and head straight into Peak District terrain, returning to a comfortable space with contemporary appliances and character features still intact after the recent work.

No smoking is permitted inside. Arrive after 4pm and depart by 10am.

Absolutely amazing experience. The place is magical. The owners responsive and kind. The space is very well organised, and the kitchen fully equipped. Highly recommended for groups and families alike.

This has been home for a week for the past ten years. The interior fixings and fittings are clean and sufficient, and it all works. What puts it to 5 stars is the wonderful view. I get up early to catch the clear air. We often take our breakfast outside. Walkers, it is a steep climb from the valley, but again, it is worth it.
