Dumfries and Galloway draws walkers, cyclists and families to its forests, coast and countryside. Butterhole Cottage is a ground-floor property on a working farm, renovated in 2019, where you have the whole place to yourselves. The layout is straightforward: a sitting room with a wood burner at the front, a kitchen-dining space, two bedrooms (one with a kingsize bed, one with two singles), and a shower room. Wi-Fi, heating, bed linen and towels are all included.
The cottage suits families and those wanting a base for outdoor activity. Mabie Forest is nearby with walking trails and the 7Stanes mountain biking routes; Stables Cafe is close by. The enclosed garden has seating and furniture, and there is parking for two cars on site. One dog stays free. The area also offers Mabie Farm Park for younger children, the coast at Southerness and Kippford, and further afield the gardens at Threave and gardens at Logan. No smoking is allowed inside.

Amazing place set in an elevated position, within walking distance of Mabie House Hotel and forest. Cottage is very well equipped and peaceful. A fantastic escape from a busy lifestyle, made even better when you can also bring your dog. Will definitely return..

We actually stayed in the Farmhouse side of this semi. It is located at the end of what becomes a fairly rough road after you pass the Mabie House Hotel, which is a good target for the satnav. The house itself is well equipped and even though we had a couple of problems (the owner replaced a faulty oven but was unable to get the plumber to fix the ensuite) we enjoyed our stay. The house has three bedrooms, with two bathrooms, the dining area is fine for six and the kitchen is adequate but the sitting area is too small. The grounds around are great and you have the forest on your doorstep, with a great farmshop (Kilnford) nearby where you can buy all you need to feed the family.
