Holiday Inn Dumfries

Room size was good and the bathroom had a separate bath and shower cubicle. Paid £197 for one night stay which included breakfast and 3 course evening meal for two adults and one child. Paying upfront for the evening meal was worth it because it worked out to £10 pp, whereas the 3 course meal is £30 pp if you turn up and pay the restaurant separately. Katie, Mary and one other waitress in the restaurant were really nice (missed her name). Damien on reception in the morning was pleasant. Cons Lady on reception desk was a little miserable (name badge a little obscured so couldn't see it properly). She was eating in the office when we arrived, told us that we needed to go for dinner right away (around 6pm) because at 7pm there were 2 coach loads of people arriving for dinner and it would be too busy. A little irritating because I called the day before to ask if booking was needed and was told no. We went to dump our bags in our room and found it had only been set for 2 people. Just the 2 towels and sofa bed not made up for our daughter. Not a problem as we were going for dinner. I told the reception staff who proceeded to tell me she would do it when she could, she was really busy because she was the only person working and was floating between reception and the restaurant as well as doing all the other things... Not impressed with the attitude. We had room 202 which is labeled as an executive room/suite but unfortunately is right next to the fire exit door and lift area. This means all you can hear is constant banging when people open and close the door both late in the evening (past 11pm) and well before 7am. The food wasn't the best, but for what we paid it was ok. Kids meal was pretty beige. Hugely different to the Chatham/Rochester Hotel we stayed in less than a week earlier. Being the same hotel chain, similar service was expected but this one didn't quite cut it sadly. Room was really tired too and quite a bit of dust in places especially around the sofa bed.

Amazing hotel inside an old mental asylum that is reportedly haunted. They are about to be undergoing a refurbishment to the old buildings upstairs haunted areas to be converted to bedrooms. As a ghost hunter myself I will be the first to book one of these rooms when available. We very much appreciated the staffs jokes about that Spirits are served here (a fun inside joke for those that are aware of the history of the hotel). If you are worried ask for a modern room in the new section (you may just hear a faint dog barking sound at night - see other reviews here). All the people working here are great fun.

Visiting the area for a funeral, I chose to stay near The Crichton and the Holiday Inn was well placed. It is a beautiful building in stunning, peaceful grounds. I ended up having an excellent stay, the bed was huge and incredibly comfortable. The room was well presented and impeccably clean, the nice touch of a woollen throw on the bed really helped me feel extra comfortable. The bathroom design was unusual but homely and the shower pressure was excellent. The staff were really pleasant and I wanted to note that once they were aware of the reasons for my visit went out of their way to make my stay as comfortable as possible - in particular John M who took the time to chat to me and kindly brought my food up to my room as I wasn't feeling very social after a difficult day. He really made my stay so a personal thank you to him. I visit Dumfries from London several times a year and wouldn't hesitate to come back, in fact I think this is my new favourite hotel in the area.

The official photos show a very charming building but thats not the hotel where you sleep, as its in the 1970s annex next door. This is also a franchised Holiday Inn, not run by IHG, and it shows. I have never been in hotel so hot in the corridors and yet cold in the rooms. Theres no A/C in the rooms. There's some form of heating in the rooms, which evidently is poor as there was also a plug in oil filled radiator as well. The rooms are a throw back to 30 years ago. It was OK, but tired. Very few sockets in the rooms. The TV was small and the signal poor, with most channels not working. The bed was not comfortable. Breakfast is self service and I found it disappointing. Most items, apart from the cooked food were not labled and you had to guess what they were. The choice was very limited and the quality at the low end. The only decaff coffee was nescafe instant, which has no taste. I did notice that there was a guest, who was known to the staff, that got special treatment, with avocado and fresh blueberries, but this was not offered to me or others. I noticed that there were outside seats, but they looked old and very battered and well past their userfulness.
