A 16th-century castle that accommodates 20 guests, Machermore stands within 30 acres of woodland on the banks of the River Cree, about 200 yards from the water. The main castle contains seven bedrooms and an annexe adds three more, each with its own shower room. Downstairs there is a dining room, kitchen equipped for serious cooking, and a first-floor living room with a woodburner (note: no television here). The annexe provides open-plan living with a 40-inch TV, a separate kitchen, and space to gather. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and heating are included.

The grounds offer a lawned garden with patio and terraced areas, plus parking for 20 cars. A shared utility room outside has a washing machine and tumble dryer. The property suits groups marking an occasion—there is catering space designed for bringing in outside cooks—or families who want everyone under one roof. The Galloway Forest Park lies nearby, offering walking, cycling and mountain biking across 300 square miles. No smoking inside the castle.

Machermore Castle was absolutely stunning – one of the most memorable stays I’ve had. The building itself is full of character and history, and the setting is just incredible – peaceful, private, and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The interior was clean, comfortable, and full of charm, with so many little details that made it feel special. It’s the perfect place to unwind and switch off for a few days. Communication was great throughout, and everything was exactly as described. Couldn’t fault a thing – I’d go back in a heartbeat. An unforgettable experience from start to finish.

Enjoyed our stay here, we were on our own at the castle as no other guests and enjoyed being left to enjoy our break with little interaction from the owner. Bed was comfortable, and as the apartment was self contained it fulfilled our needs, plenty of parking. Would happily go back thank you.

This place is simply awesome and great value for money. I stayed here last week with my friend. We stayed in one of the castles bedrooms which is not located in the main castle building but in one of the attachments. The room was cozy and very warm. The bed was super comfortable and I had the perfect nights sleep. The Bathroom is excellent with a very powerful shower. Although no TV in the room its not a big issue as we were there to chill out and enjoy the countryside and fresh air. Will definitely visit again.

Very happy with our stay. Room was clean, excellent shower, good location for a short drive for the Wigtown Book Festival. WiFi worked well too. Very aware this is personal preference, but the mattress was very soft. Due to back issues, I prefer a firmer mattress. However, I'm sure there are many people out there who prefer a soft mattress. I would recommend, and certainly use again.
