Machermore Castle - South Lodge

Dumfries and Galloway

View on Google Maps

Photo: Machermore Castle

Newton Stewart sits at the heart of Dumfries and Galloway's outdoor country, a mile from shops and restaurants, and closer still to some of Scotland's most compelling walking terrain. Machermore Castle's South Lodge occupies the estate grounds here, where woodland begins at your door and the Galloway Forest Park—Britain's largest at 300 square miles—stretches beyond. The lodge itself is a mid-terraced property sleeping six across three bedrooms: two doubles and a twin, all on the ground floor alongside a shower room, kitchen and open living space.

Everything happens at ground level. The kitchen has an electric cooker, microwave and washing machine for longer stays. A 40-inch TV, heating and wi-fi are included, as are bed linen and towels. Parking for two cars sits on the property. The enclosed garden has a patio and furniture; beyond that lie 30 acres of shared grounds, including a river a third of a mile distant. One dog travels free.

The forest park offers hill walking, ancient woodland and three visitor centres; heading west takes you to coastal villages at Portpatrick and Port William, with a beach eight miles away. Galloway's other draws—Gatehouse of Fleet, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright—are all within reach. Smoking is not permitted inside.

Machermore Castle was absolutely stunning – one of the most memorable stays I’ve had. The building itself is full of character and history, and the setting is just incredible – peaceful, private, and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The interior was clean, comfortable, and full of charm, with so many little details that made it feel special. It’s the perfect place to unwind and switch off for a few days. Communication was great throughout, and everything was exactly as described. Couldn’t fault a thing – I’d go back in a heartbeat. An unforgettable experience from start to finish.

Enjoyed our stay here, we were on our own at the castle as no other guests and enjoyed being left to enjoy our break with little interaction from the owner. Bed was comfortable, and as the apartment was self contained it fulfilled our needs, plenty of parking. Would happily go back thank you.

This place is simply awesome and great value for money. I stayed here last week with my friend. We stayed in one of the castles bedrooms which is not located in the main castle building but in one of the attachments. The room was cozy and very warm. The bed was super comfortable and I had the perfect nights sleep. The Bathroom is excellent with a very powerful shower. Although no TV in the room its not a big issue as we were there to chill out and enjoy the countryside and fresh air. Will definitely visit again.

Very happy with our stay. Room was clean, excellent shower, good location for a short drive for the Wigtown Book Festival. WiFi worked well too. Very aware this is personal preference, but the mattress was very soft. Due to back issues, I prefer a firmer mattress. However, I'm sure there are many people out there who prefer a soft mattress. I would recommend, and certainly use again.
