Machermore Castle - The Bothy is an annexe to the historic castle, set within a private 30-acre estate near Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway. The property sleeps six across three bedrooms—two with super kingsize beds and one double—served by a single bathroom with bath and shower. Everything essential is covered: electricity, heating via biomass system, bed linen, towels and wifi are all included, along with a welcome pack on arrival.

The living space sits upstairs, opening onto views across private gardens toward the River Cree. The kitchen is fully fitted for self-catering, with electric oven, induction hob, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave and coffee machine. Downstairs there's a utility room with washing machine and the bathroom. The grounds are shared with other properties on the estate but offer direct access to woodland walks. Free parking for two cars is provided. The property is non-smoking, and the grounds slope in places with a river 200 yards away.

Newton Stewart is just over a mile away for shops and food. The Galloway Forest Park lies nearby with walking, mountain biking and trails; Gatehouse of Fleet, Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbricht are all within reach for exploring the wider region. One well-behaved pet is welcome.

Machermore Castle was absolutely stunning – one of the most memorable stays I’ve had. The building itself is full of character and history, and the setting is just incredible – peaceful, private, and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The interior was clean, comfortable, and full of charm, with so many little details that made it feel special. It’s the perfect place to unwind and switch off for a few days. Communication was great throughout, and everything was exactly as described. Couldn’t fault a thing – I’d go back in a heartbeat. An unforgettable experience from start to finish.

Enjoyed our stay here, we were on our own at the castle as no other guests and enjoyed being left to enjoy our break with little interaction from the owner. Bed was comfortable, and as the apartment was self contained it fulfilled our needs, plenty of parking. Would happily go back thank you.

This place is simply awesome and great value for money. I stayed here last week with my friend. We stayed in one of the castles bedrooms which is not located in the main castle building but in one of the attachments. The room was cozy and very warm. The bed was super comfortable and I had the perfect nights sleep. The Bathroom is excellent with a very powerful shower. Although no TV in the room its not a big issue as we were there to chill out and enjoy the countryside and fresh air. Will definitely visit again.

Very happy with our stay. Room was clean, excellent shower, good location for a short drive for the Wigtown Book Festival. WiFi worked well too. Very aware this is personal preference, but the mattress was very soft. Due to back issues, I prefer a firmer mattress. However, I'm sure there are many people out there who prefer a soft mattress. I would recommend, and certainly use again.
