Machermore Castle - West Lodge

Dumfries and Galloway

Photo: Machermore Castle

Newton Stewart and the Galloway countryside surround this ground-floor lodge, which sits within the Machermore Castle Estate among trees and grounds shared with other properties on-site. The River Cree flows through the 30 acres, about 200 yards from the house. Shops, a pub and restaurants are roughly a mile away in the village; the coast lies eight miles south.

The layout is open plan across one level, with a living area and dining space, a kitchen fitted to cook proper meals, and four bedrooms—three with double beds and one with two singles—served by a bathroom and separate shower room. Essentials like heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are included. An enclosed lawned garden with patio and furniture looks onto the grounds; private parking accommodates two cars. One well-behaved pet stays free.

Nearby towns bring food, culture and outdoor interests within reach: Castle Douglas for specialist food shops, Gatehouse of Fleet for eating and drinking plus the Mill on the Fleet visitor centre, and Kirkcudbright as an artist community with a working harbour and events throughout the year. The Galloway Forest Park, Britain's largest, opens up to the east with valleys, moorland, ancient woodland and wildlife including deer and birds of prey. No smoking in the lodge.

Machermore Castle was absolutely stunning – one of the most memorable stays I’ve had. The building itself is full of character and history, and the setting is just incredible – peaceful, private, and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The interior was clean, comfortable, and full of charm, with so many little details that made it feel special. It’s the perfect place to unwind and switch off for a few days. Communication was great throughout, and everything was exactly as described. Couldn’t fault a thing – I’d go back in a heartbeat. An unforgettable experience from start to finish.

Enjoyed our stay here, we were on our own at the castle as no other guests and enjoyed being left to enjoy our break with little interaction from the owner. Bed was comfortable, and as the apartment was self contained it fulfilled our needs, plenty of parking. Would happily go back thank you.

This place is simply awesome and great value for money. I stayed here last week with my friend. We stayed in one of the castles bedrooms which is not located in the main castle building but in one of the attachments. The room was cozy and very warm. The bed was super comfortable and I had the perfect nights sleep. The Bathroom is excellent with a very powerful shower. Although no TV in the room its not a big issue as we were there to chill out and enjoy the countryside and fresh air. Will definitely visit again.

Very happy with our stay. Room was clean, excellent shower, good location for a short drive for the Wigtown Book Festival. WiFi worked well too. Very aware this is personal preference, but the mattress was very soft. Due to back issues, I prefer a firmer mattress. However, I'm sure there are many people out there who prefer a soft mattress. I would recommend, and certainly use again.
