What visitors say

A modern view of a castle with experts to hand to tell the story. Interestingly, they have a pianist playing in one of the rooms which really gives you a feel into how the piano sounded in the room. The site also has a beautifully looked after garden with the National Trust also selling plants next to the gift shop.

Imposing castle set amongst neatly kept gardens on the edge of Dartmoor, with fine views over the Teign Gorge. Castle Drogo was designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in the 20th century as England's most recent castle. Its design incorporated internal drainage and pipework, allowing for a purposeful external appearance but besetting the building with structural issues from early in its life. Extensive restoration by the National Trust has preserved it for the future. The building's extensive interior is characterised by exposed stone walls and high arched ceilings that echo a medieval castle. Rooms are attractively furnished and incorporate some unusual early technological innovations, such as a bath with integrated shower. Displays inside the castle showcase possessions of the original residents, and their accompanying stories. The site also includes beautifully kept gardens and walks to the Teign Gorge. Facilities include a large café offering light lunches and refreshments, a gift shop, pre-owned bookshop and toilets. At the time of our visit, adult tickets were £13, which felt like good value for a large site. During peak season prices are increased by just under 40%. Parking is charged separately, but free for National Trust members. We visited Castle Drogo looking for an indoor attraction to occupy a wet day, but would recommend it whatever the weather.

First visited 2013 when still under conservation.. What a difference now.. Considering it was only started in 1911 and fully completed by 1930/31 it's one of National Trusts youngest propertys... but it's attention to detail and authentic in it's own right that it makes it so worth a visit... Designed and built by the great architect of his time.. Edwin Luytens. It Is a bit of a task to get there as very narrow roads but worth the visit. As most trust properties...dog friendly except the house. Fantastic views and walks around the substantial property. Enjoy..

We visited Castle Drogo after completing the Hunter’s and Fisherman’s Path walk from Fingle Bridge Inn, and it was the perfect way to finish the day. The gardens were beautiful, full of colour and immaculately maintained, with plenty of peaceful spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings. The café was a welcome stop for a well-earned cream tea after the walk. A lovely National Trust property and well worth a visit.
