About Edinburgh Thistle Hotel

Step into a room at Edinburgh Thistle Hotel and you get a sense of old-world character rather than a polished modern box, with drinks in room and a cosy, lived-in feel that guests tend to warm to. There are 16 rooms in total, and while the charm is genuine, some have been noted as tired or in need of better upkeep, so it suits travellers after atmosphere and value over slick finish.

Downstairs, the hotel offers a bar, breakfast, free WiFi and a garden, with 24 hour reception, concierge services and meeting rooms on hand for those who need them. Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, which goes some way to explaining the hotel's reputation for good value in a city that isn't always cheap to stay in.

Set on Manor Place in Edinburgh, the hotel is well placed for exploring the city, with Edinburgh Zoo among the nearby points of interest and Haymarket close at hand. Pubs, restaurants and other eateries are all within easy reach, making it a straightforward base for a few days taking in the sights.

We loved our stay at the Thistle Hotel. It's an older building with all the little quirks you'd expect, but to us that just added to its charm and character. If you're looking for sleek and modern this isn't it, but if you appreciate places with personality like we do, it's the perfect choice. The absolute highlight, though, was the staff. Every single person we met was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and incredibly accommodating. Nothing ever felt like too much trouble, and they made us feel looked after from the moment we arrived until we left. Great service can make or break a stay, and the team here absolutely made ours. We'd happily stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a hotel with character and genuinely wonderful hospitality.

Honestly loved this place and WILL be going back if I make it back to Edinburgh again. It was a beautiful old hotel with gorgeous character. The staff were all so friendly. And the location was so ideal. I’ve seen a lot of comments about the water temp in the shower or the service and I honestly didn’t have a problem with either. You just had to wait a little bit for the water to get to temp. So like.. have a shred of patience and you’ll be fine. No regrets choosing this place!

We had a wonderful stay at this charming hotel. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by how elegant, peaceful, and full of authentic antique old-world charm it felt. This is definitely the hotel for people who appreciate classic character and history rather than the modern, sleek look most hotels have nowadays. Yes, because it’s an older building there are some minor cosmetic issues and creaky floors, but if you love old places like we do, these only add to the atmosphere and aren’t an issue at all. The staff was impressively friendly and genuinely welcoming. Special mention to Axe, who was absolutely delightful and went out of his way to give us excellent local tips that really enhanced our stay. Every morning, there was breakfast served downstairs, along with fresh coffee and tea. The rooms are like being at home and decorated with a very comfortable, classic feel. Location-wise, the hotel is fantastic. It’s within easy walking distance to major tourist sites, shopping areas, and plenty of great restaurants. We couldn’t have asked for a better base for our trip. Thank you to the whole team for making our stay so enjoyable! We’ll definitely be back.

We had a lovely stay at the hotel. The property was clean, well-kept, and within easy walking distance of many attractions. The overall experience was well worth the cost. A big thank you for the room overlooking Edinburgh Castle—the view was stunning, especially in the morning and evening. It was a wonderful touch that we truly appreciated.
