About Elder York Guest House

Just 0.3 miles from Edinburgh Waverley, Elder York Guest House occupies a stone building on Elder Street, putting arrivals by train within easy reach of the front door. This is a straightforward, unpretentious guesthouse rather than a grand hotel, and it suits guests who want a comfortable base without fuss.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, family rooms for those travelling together, and drinks available in room, while free WiFi and 24 hour reception cover the practical basics. Mornings start with a Scottish breakfast, and luggage storage is on hand for early arrivals or late departures.

The surrounding area offers plenty to fill the rest of the day, with pubs, bars and restaurants nearby alongside entertainment options, walking and cycling routes, a golf course, fishing and watersports all within reach, and Edinburgh Zoo a further point of interest close by. It's a no-nonsense choice for anyone wanting to be near the station and out exploring the city quickly.

Stayed here in the spring in 2024. The guest house is in a good location, and the host was lovely. The room was okay, but in need of a good dust… as someone with asthma, I ended up a bit unwell after staying in the room for one night. The breakfast the next day was nice and tasty however.

Travelers, stay at Elder York Guest House!!! It’s simply wonderful — my wife and I have never felt so warmly welcomed and cared for in any accommodation or hotel throughout all of Europe. If you stay here, you’ll understand exactly what I mean. Thank you so much, Murray and your father — you truly made our days in Edinburgh the most unforgettable of our lives. This place gives you a true Scottish experience and is within walking distance of all the major tourist attractions. Tired after a long day and not in the mood to go far for food? No problem — just a 30-second walk and you're literally at the door of a Five Guys. (My wife and I went three times just so we could get back quickly and keep enjoying Elder York!) Because of the time zone difference, I had to attend a 5:00 AM meeting with my lab team (I’m a PhD student), and Murray’s father — the host — kindly asked if I’d like a cup of tea. Mind you, breakfast only starts at 7:00 AM. If you're planning to visit the Highlands, you can take a one-day tour (like the ones offered by Timberbush), and return in the evening to rest at the Elder York Guest House. No matter what you’re doing in Scotland — stay here!

Small guest house in great location for easy walking in a beautiful and ancient city. Wonderful service, helpful management, tasty breakfast. No elevator. Several flights of stairs, so beware.
