About Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre York Place St James Quarter hotel
Anyone after a straightforward Edinburgh city break will find Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre York Place St James Quarter suits the job well, with 127 rooms set on four floors just a short walk from St James Quarter, the Playhouse and Waverley Station. It works equally for weekend shoppers, theatre-goers and those passing through by train, with chargeable parking available nearby for anyone driving in.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and drinks available in-room, and several offer good views over the city. Accessible rooms are available, and the hotel runs a 24 hour reception, a lift, a bar and a restaurant serving breakfast with a decent range of choice. Some rooms show signs of wear, so it's worth bearing that in mind alongside the otherwise comfortable stay.
Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, and the location is the real draw, putting guests within easy reach of pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby. For a central, no-fuss stay geared towards getting out and exploring the city rather than lingering in the room, this fits the brief.
What guests say
They delayed our check-in by 1.5 hours. We arrived with two small children after a long trip, which made the wait even more difficult. Our room (No. 4) was in the basement and definitely wasn't suitable as a family room. It had one double bed and two single beds with almost no space between them. The air conditioning didn't work properly. Even when we set the thermostat to 30°C, it was still blowing cold air. The room only had two towels when we arrived, even though there were four of us, so we had to ask for more. Overall, we were very disappointed

The staff member Kelly deserves a medal for being incredibly helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. She was in one evening and then back the next morning. The location is brilliant for exploring Edinburgh and really close to Waverley Station, but be prepared for a slightly tired building, compared to other Premier Inns I have stayed in recently. It was impossible to change the temperature in the room. The instructions for the fan were for a newer model than the one in the room and it ignored all my attempts at changing temperature, which left us with an ice box. Lovely Kelly tried to help from the office but had no luck either. In the end, we turned off the fan althogether, which made the room comfortable. We only had one set of towels in the room and again Kelly helped us out. My bedside table lamp didn't work properly. The switch also turned on the ceiling light, no matter which combination I tried, not ideal when your partner is trying to sleep while you're still reading. No socket right by the bed, so impossible to charge phone/tablet/kindle overnight and have it nearby. The rooms weren't dusted very well and there was so much hair in the sink that the water didn't drain properly. I had to clean the drain myself, which was rather unpleasant. We really like PremierInn Hotels, but this one needs a bit of attention.

The service completely does not match the price. At an average of £177 per night, the experience was very disappointing. The free Wi-Fi was extremely slow, and guests had to pay extra every day for high-speed Wi-Fi. The process was also unnecessarily complicated, requiring card details and multiple steps each time. Room cleaning was another major issue. You had to go downstairs and specifically request housekeeping at the front desk every single day, otherwise the room would not be cleaned. Even after informing the front desk, there was still no guarantee the room would actually be serviced. When returning to the hotel at night, the only response was often that the cleaning staff had already gone home and the room would be cleaned the next day. Cleanliness standards were also poor. The hand soap dispenser button was dirty, and the cups provided in the room were dirty as well. Most hotels at this price point provide separate shampoo, body wash, and conditioner, but this hotel only offered a single all-in-one bottle for everything. Overall, I would not recommend staying here.

A two night stay in May for a business trip, I have stayed in many Premier Inn hotels over the years and previously I have always found them to be excellent - they have been clean, comfortable and welcoming. Unfortunately, my stay at the Premier Inn in York Place on this occasion was extremely disappointing. My flight into Edinburgh had been delayed by a number of hours, so I arrived at the hotel exhausted and hungry. Despite it being just after 9pm and before the restaurant was due to close, I was informed that they had decided to close for the evening - staff were still standing around the restaurant not doing much and there were still plenty tables available. The last thing I wanted after a long day of travelling was to have to traipse around the streets of Edinburgh looking for somewhere to eat. I had also asked for a quiet room on booking, but was given one of the noisiest next to the front door. Most disappointing however was the cleanliness of this hotel. The hallway to the hotel was filthy, and looked like it needed a good hoover - littered with dirt, fluff and other litter. During my two night stay it didn't get hoovered at all, and the same dirt was lying outside my door when I left. In the room itself the surfaces were dusty, the bedroom carpet again didn't appear to have been hoovered properly and the bathroom wasn't that clean either. Worst of all, on the bedside table was squashed nose snot. I stayed a year ago at this hotel, and standards seem to have really slipped. The breakfast was very good, and the location of the hotel is excellent - its central location makes it perfectly located for exploring Edinburgh, with the tram and bus stops very close by. Princes Street is just a short walk away and the Edinburgh Playhouse is just down the road. I don't often write critical reviews, but if the cleanliness of the Premier Inn at York Place is the new Premier Inn standard, then in my opinion they have really deteriorated. I won't be returning and could no longer recommend this hotel to friends and family.
