Ibis is a brand I have frequented for a very long time, but I must say I have grown dissatisfied with it as I have noticed their hotels have fallen in a state of disrepair and carelessness. Let me start with all the positive features: absolutely great location, right in the middle of all the action on the Royal Mile, surrounded by many restaurants, bars, many other businesses and street performers. Other good things were the breakfast: a very well assorted menu with quality items and the dedicated attention of the breakfast staff, the kindness and courtesy of the reception staff, all of them were very attentive and helpful. I stayed in three different Ibis hotels in three different cities on this trip, and I must say this one on Royal Mile in Edinburgh was the worst of them. Not only are the rooms not big enough for more than one person, but the carpets are dirty and stained from the bottom floor all the way to the corridors. The carpet had stains in it from the elevator all the way to our room, and also in our room. The furniture was dated and had signs of overuse, the bathroom fan did not work and we believe it was due to all the dust that was accumulated in it as it could be easily seen from where we were standing. The place, including the elevators, just gave the impression of a dirty, dingy hotel. The exterior was also dirty as many intoxicated individuals seem to gather there through the night. The towels were also worn and in need of replacement. For the price they charge per night, one expects a significant upgrade from what one would get from a 1 star rated alley motel. Sorry to be so descriptive, but this one was an expensive choice and we don't feel it was worth the money. While summer is an expensive season in which to travel, the prices charged were nothing short of simple price gouging. Or, are hotels paying workers more money this season?

Really pleasant staff welcomed us at check-in. The hotel was easy to find and only a short walk from the station. Being right in the heart of the tourist hot-spot the hotel couldn't be in a better location. Rooms are well appointed and clean. There is a bar. The breakfast is very poor quality and the room isn't kept clean - the trolley for the used breakfast dishes is filthy and hasn't been cleaned for months. The staff clean the tabletop but not the floor. Basically, lots of places nearby doing a vastly superior breakfast for a fraction of the price

We ended up checking out early and staying around the corner on the Royal Mile at a more family friendly hotel. The rooms were extremely small and no air conditioning so it was quite warm even on the cooler/rainy days. The noise from the bars made it difficult for our kids and ourselves to sleep and one night there were several police cars in the square breaking up a massive fight. Would not recommend for the price. We found a much nicer hotel around the corner for roughly the same price, with a pool and very quiet.

Check in was smooth and efficient. No car parking available on site. NCP garage 7 minutes walk away. Minimal discount on parking rates. Room was very compact, adequate for our needs, but not particularly comfortable. Area around hotel consisted of many pubs and clubs. Daytime drunks were loud and obvious. Breakfast was good, with buffet style presentation. Located just yards from the Royal Mile, close to St. Giles' Cathedral. 8/10 is generous.
