About Smiths Guest House

Rooms at Smiths Guest House are kept simple and practical: each has an en-suite bathroom, a flat-screen TV, free WiFi and drinks laid on, giving guests the basics done well rather than any frills. This is an adults-only property, which suits those after a quieter stay on Mayfield Road in Edinburgh.

Breakfast is included, and the guest house runs a 24 hour reception so arrival times are flexible. Free on-site parking is available, which is a useful bonus in a city where street parking can be tricky. The style throughout is unfussy rather than polished, so expect a modest, comfortable base rather than a design hotel.

Edinburgh Waverley station is around 2.33 miles away, and Edinburgh Zoo gives visitors a nearby point of interest to build a day around. The surrounding area also has walking routes, golf and fishing within reach, along with pubs, restaurants and other eateries close by for evenings out.

I stayed here for three nights in a single room. If you have cleaning sensitivities or OCD, note that the furnishings are a bit old, but the room and en-suite bathroom were generally clean. Neil and Moyra were kind and helpful hosts. The guest house is about a 30 minute walk from the city centre, but it’s easily accessible by bus as well, the nearest bus stop is only about 7 minutes away. There are some nice cafés nearby, and the closest supermarkets are around 10–15 minutes away. One thing to keep in mind if you’re a solo traveller: although Edinburgh is quite bright overall, the area around the guest house isn’t very well-lit at night. Still, I felt safe, and I really enjoyed my stay. I would definitely choose to stay here again.

I had the single room which has a private bathroom across the hall. Nice decor, warm and all the usual amenities. No breakfast, but for me that is a plus point, lots of eating places within walking distance. Good location on two bus routes to city. Allowed me to store my folding bike, which I used to tour the city and Midlothian. It is also close to the Braid Hills, from which there are great views across the city. The Braids are a gem within the city.

I stayed here for 5 weeks and Neil and Moira never disappoint. Warm and friendly couple who made sure that every single day of my stay is pleasant and are very flexible in the arrangements that I have requested for. The place is strategicaly located in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood with easy access to at least four bus stops. If you feel like taking a lovely walk, the city center is not that far and there are lots of restaurants along the way. There are also restaurants for dine in and take away, pharmacy, grocery stores, barber shop and beauty salon all within a minute walk. I won't be having second thoughts on staying in this place again if given the opportunity. Thanks Neil and Moira for the warm hospitality. Cheers!

Really really nice! Great and warm welcome. Nice room and all was clean. Delicious breakfast with toast, jam and fruits - and the best tea I've ever had! Neil was a perfect assistant/guide for all my planed trips! He knows all and likes to talk about scotish stuff. Dog lovers like me - sure I will come back!!!
