About The Guards Hotel

Edinburgh's West End area, close to Haymarket and within reach of Edinburgh Zoo, is where you'll find The Guards Hotel, a small 11-room property on Clifton Terrace. It's a practical choice for exploring the city without paying central prices, and the free on-site parking is a genuine plus for anyone arriving by car.

Rooms are straightforward rather than stylish, and some guests have noted that both the rooms and the wider facilities could do with more upkeep, so it's worth setting expectations accordingly. That said, the hotel covers the basics well: a restaurant and bar on site, breakfast available, free WiFi, air conditioning, and drinks in the room. There's also a gym, an indoor swimming pool, and a spa/sauna for guests who want to relax after a day of sightseeing, plus a garden, lift access, and concierge and porter services. Pets are welcome, and the hotel can also host weddings.

Beyond the hotel, the surrounding area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby, and Edinburgh Haymarket is close enough for easy access into the city centre. For anyone prioritising location and value over polish, The Guards Hotel offers a fair, no-frills base for an Edinburgh visit.

I stayed at The Guards Hotel in Edinburgh last week and had a really positive experience. The location is excellent—just a short walk from Haymarket, which made getting around the city really easy. Whether heading into the centre or arriving by train or tram, it’s very convenient. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout my stay, which made a big difference. Check-in was smooth, and I felt well looked after. My room was comfortable and had everything I needed. While the hotel isn’t the most modern, it was clean, warm, and good value for money—especially for Edinburgh. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely return. If you’re looking for a well-located, affordable place with a friendly atmosphere, it’s a solid choice.

Negatives - Room tiny. As hot as holy hell. Only top of windows open to let air in. The shower runs cold, washing hair is not for the feint hearted. TV does not work adequately. Positives (could be seen as a negative) - one is left to their own devices once in. A phone number is available for Hamed and he says to phone at any time.

Outside of the city centre in Haymarket but it does mean quiet especially at night and it does mean cheaper. Yes it could be called basic but you know what the staff are friendly if has all the needed amenities just no frills and importantly it's clean what more could you ask for?

Nice budget hotel. Was offered a choice of rooms. Well located next to Haymarket railway station, so good links to Waverley station. Would use again.
