About Mercure Hereford Green Dragon Hotel
The Green Dragon has stood on Broad Street since the coaching era, its frontage a familiar landmark opposite Hereford Cathedral. Now run under the Mercure brand, the hotel keeps a sense of its history in the public rooms while offering a more standard, updated hotel bedroom stock across its many rooms.
Its position on Broad Street puts it within a couple of minutes' walk of the cathedral, High Town and the indoor market, making it one of the most central options in the city for anyone without a car. The hotel has function rooms and a bar that make it popular for local events as well as overnight stays.
Being part of a large hotel group means straightforward booking and consistent standards, an advantage for visitors who want a dependable central base without seeking out an independent alternative.

What guests say
We stayed at the hotel during the end-of-June heatwave, which was incredibly unfortunate because the room was horrendously hot. The temperature issue was mentioned to us at check-in, and the staff mentioned we could come downstairs to get free water at any point - which is a great gesture but did not do anything to alleviate the stiflingly hot bedroom and bathroom, especially since we were two floors away from reception. Even with the window wide open all day and night, the room never got any cooler, and the best the hotel could offer in terms of cooling was a desk fan which did make it possible to sleep - albeit with no sheets and quite restlessly. We were in Hereford to attend a wedding and getting ready for that while constantly sweating was a horrible experience. The reception staff were all wonderful throughout the stay and I'm sure it wasn't easy to deal with the situation, but the current system for handling high temperatures really isn't fit for purpose. The bathroom is also not great - the shower is an overhead rainfall shower which for some reason is perfectly centrally aligned with the end of the shower door, which meant there was no way to avoid water going everywhere. I also found the staff at breakfast quite standoffish. Breakfast is offered at £19.50 per person per day, something which was not mentioned when the person who checked us in asked if we wanted it. That prices means you can get whatever you want (aside from espresso based drinks like lattes and cappucinos). There were buffet options and the menu we were given showed we could order from that as well, although it was very unclear how to go about doing that as no one came to the table at any point. The juice was also very poor quality (more like squash) which was a shame. I don't think the breakfast is value for money unless you have a huge appetite for Full-English breakfast type items. It is a very attractive hotel but we wouldn't stay again.

A special mention to Maddy....you are an asset to that Hotel. Ide had a bad day and made a mistake with my bookng on booking.com, i phoned a bit stressed and Maddy sorted it quickly. Very calm, understanding. I have staff and my own business and empathy and patience is rare when dealing with the public. If you are reading this and you are Maddys boss please recognise her efforts and her attention to the job. Thank you.

The hotel is very nice, with comfortable rooms. It has a long rambling layout and a long history. Both dinner and breakfast menus are good, and the service is good. The noise from local pubs at night is annoying and raucous, and the seagulls make a lot of noise singing the songs of their people from first light. But that is out of the hotel's control. Using earplugs is recommended. On the whole a good place to stay.

The rooms were comfortable enough, but they were very warm on the south facing side (during May heat wave 2026). The building itself is absolutely beautiful, decor was very well suited and very clean. Location to local bars and restaurants was convenient with both front and rear access of the hotel.

Guests consistently praise this hotel for its welcoming atmosphere, delicious food with gluten-free options, and the friendly, helpful staff.
Other reviews mention the rooms can be poorly maintained and the service can be inconsistent.
