What visitors say
It's amazing! I love the staffs, they are friendly! On entering one of them approached me and explained everything happening today Sunday, when the next train will arrive. It's a wee museum with loads of things to see, oh kids will love it as well. They have mini train ride outside.

Great railway to visit family friendly, train rides available on Sundays and other dates. Check timetable before visiting. We visited today as there was a model railway exhibition too

Stephenson Steam Railway is a wonderful place to visit and one of those attractions that's well worth adding to your itinerary if you're in the Newcastle area. We visited with our 5-year-old, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our day. The steam train ride isn't very long, but it's a genuinely enjoyable experience. Seeing the beautifully restored steam locomotive up close, hearing the whistle, and watching the engine pull the carriages along the historic line creates a real sense of nostalgia. Our child especially enjoyed sitting by the window and waving to people along the route. Watching the locomotive uncouple and move to the other end of the train before the return journey was fascinating, even for the adults. The volunteers and staff deserve special praise—they were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions about the railway and its history. Their enthusiasm really adds to the overall experience. The museum itself is well maintained and packed with interesting exhibits, including historic locomotives, carriages, railway equipment, and interactive displays that help bring the story of Britain's railway heritage to life. It's educational without feeling overwhelming, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. There is also a pleasant café serving drinks, snacks, and light meals, making it easy to spend a few relaxing hours here. The site is clean, well organised, and has plenty of free parking. If you're expecting a full-day theme park, this isn't that kind of attraction. Instead, it's a peaceful, authentic heritage railway experience that's perfect for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone looking for something a little different. We left with some lovely memories, and our little one was still talking about the steam train on the drive home. We'd happily recommend Stephenson Steam Railway and would definitely visit again in the future.

We had a lovely stop off here for a heritage steam train journey up and down the line on a Sunday. It took about half an hour and we got to see the engine uncoupling and re-coupling at the end of the line. Staff were very friendly. There was live music for an event in the museum section so didn't really take a look round there as it was a bit loud for our kids. But they did enjoy the table with colouring pictures of trains and we also had a delicious strawberry and chocolate scone in the café. It was very reasonably priced though the cream tea had run out so I'd say if you want one of those, go early. There were toilets there too but didn't use them so can't comment on those. There was lots of parking with some parent and toddler spaces. There were some other spaces that would have been suitable for longer vehicles too. Overall we spent a lovely hour or so there and the kids enjoyed themselves.
