About Croft 183 Caravan and Camping Site

Landing at Barra Airport – the world's only beach runway – sets the tone for a stay at this remote family-run site on the island's east coast. The owners will collect you from plane or ferry, then settle you onto grass or hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups available, all overlooking striking sea views and three fishing lochs. A campers' lounge doubles as a social hub with kitchen, TV, games and local tips, while a well-stocked shop, launderette with phone sockets, and play park add practical comforts.

Campfires are encouraged – ideal for cooking cockles foraged from that same tidal runway beach (check the windsock first). Buses to Castlebay's Co-op and restaurants stop nearby, though some visitors note the facilities can feel a touch tired in places. Still, with patio barbecue areas for sunset-watching and a genuinely warm island welcome, it's a peaceful base for exploring one of Scotland's most spectacular corners.

We found this lovely hostel/camper van accommodation through Helen at the Padula Island Stores at Castlebay. Although 4.5k from Castlebay, it offers very clean, good quality hostel en suite rooms with individual/communal kitchen/dining areas . The rates were very reasonable. We were very impressed and decided to stay a second night. Ian and Pete were very helpful and friendly. We will definitely revisit .

Great place, spotless, in excellent order. Ian was very helpful. Useful to have a fridge and cooker. Good value, too.

Stayed here with our motorhome. Ian was extremely friendly and explained all the facilities in detail. Electric hook up, fresh water fill up and toilet tank emptying and hosing point. Ian also let us use the shower, toilet and kitchen in the adjacent hostel as it was not occupied. Very happy to recommend.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay on more of a budget this place is perfect, has everything you could need and more to stay comfortably on the island! I stayed in the hostel lodgings, due to the time of year I stayed (Feb) I was the only one so had free reign of the common areas- but I can imagine in busier seasons it’s really fun and a great place to meet people. It’s very very spacious (not just saying that because I was alone it really is). I mainly corresponded with Peter (and Mac the dog) over my stay, who live in the nearby house. He would check in with me in the evenings after I’d been hiking around all day which I really appreciated as a solo traveller. Hospitality and everything 10/10. Would definitely stay again, thanks again all for making my stay so comfortable.
