Gill Head Farm

Troutbeck, Penrith CA11 0ST, UK

Quiet working-farm site near Ullswater, nine miles from Keswick

About Gill Head Farm

Gill Head Farm sits in the hamlet of Troutbeck on the quieter eastern side of the Lake District, nine miles from Keswick and a similar distance from Ullswater. This working farm site commands panoramic views towards Blencathra and the northern fells, offering a genuinely peaceful, family-friendly alternative to the busier pitches clustered around Derwentwater. The setting is sheltered and rural, with hardstanding pitches for tourers, grass for tents, and a handful of insulated camping pods for those travelling light.

Facilities include a modern heated toilet and shower block, laundry, free wifi and a covered cooking and seating area—practical rather than flashy, but well-maintained. The on-site farm shop is a highlight, stocking locally reared meat, eggs and other produce direct from the farm. Dogs are welcome throughout.

The location makes a smart base for exploring both the northern lakes around Keswick and Bassenthwaite and the Ullswater valley to the east, without committing to one side of the national park. Being slightly off the main tourist trail, it tends to have better availability in peak season while still sitting within a comfortable drive of Keswick's shops, pubs and fells.

There were really good facilities - plenty of toilets, showers etc, never had to wait (although I did shower late morning or late evening so that might have made a difference). Mostly people were respectful and quiet in our area on the far side furtherest from the toilets. There was one morning where a family was up and talking at 5am, and another morning where there were screaming children and adults talking loudly at 7am, but not something the host can really control at that time. Good communal area where we were able to charge our phones. Although we didn't use, there are 2 large fridge/freezer units. Only downside is the side was very crowded come the weekend. We arrived on the Wednesday before the bank holiday and by Friday there were cars everywhere parked all over and lots of tents crowded together. It was difficult to find anywhere to park near our tent. My partner commented that it looked a bit more like a festival than a campsite.

Brilliant campsite with great access to many lakes and mountains. Helpful common room and fridge and freezer. Lovely views. Quiet by 10pm and before 8am. Family orientated and lovely playpark for younger kids.

Camping - Fantastic stay – clean, well-equipped, peaceful We spent 2 nights here and really enjoyed our stay. The facilities were spotless and very well-equipped – there’s even a communal indoor area with tables, sofa, TV, microwave, fridge/freezer and kettle. So useful! There are picnic benches around the field, which makes it easy to enjoy meals outdoors – especially by the fire, as campfires are allowed. The site is spacious, so even when busy, there’s a good sense of privacy. Quiet hours were respected, and it felt peaceful and relaxed. The bathrooms were clean and plentiful, with great extras like a makeup station with mirror, hairdryer, and a large sheltered washing-up area. The reception doubles as a shop, and the lady there was very friendly and helpful. The only downside was the number of insects (flies, wasps, horseflies) – maybe a few traps would help. Also, not much shade on hot days, but we had a rare 29°C, so that’s not a big issue. Location is perfect – just outside Keswick with lovely views of the hills. Waking up to the sound of birds and sheep was the best way to start the day. Would definitely return!
